「おともだちとギョーザパーティー」 (Otomodachi to Gyooza Paatii)
“Friends and Gyoza Party”

This week’s episode was a big one-two punch to the heart. Do the writers have no sympathy for us?!

The True Meaning of Friendship

While it might not have been as powerful for those of you who have a pretty good life right now, everything and anything about Shinbou resonated so perfectly with me that I’m actually having a little difficulty putting how it made me feel in words. The headstrong friend who likes to attack things head on but still has the ability to read the situation before getting too caught up in their own pace, I have nothing but praise for Shinobu. The way she tried to push herself into Kotori’s life because of how much she cares about her and then realizing just how much Kotori cherished what she had with Tsumugi and Kouhei caught me so off guard that I nearly starting tearing up after watching it. And don’t get me wrong, I had my concerns with Shinobu forcing herself into our trio’s cooking time, but when I saw her realize what she’d done and even slyly excuse herself from future plans I just couldn’t take it. Because as much as I don’t want to admit it, I would really like someone as straightforward and honest as Shinobu in my life.

Dad-Mode

As short as it was, I loved getting the opportunity to see Kouhei do some legitimate parenting. Even in his slightly roundabout way of trying to get his point across, how can you not smile as he struggles trying to be stern when his precious baby girl is obviously not happy with the response she’s getting? God, it’s the little things like this that just ignite my passion for the show.

Gyoza Party!

Jumping off the sappy train though, wasn’t this week’s food of choice pretty awesome? Seeing everyone pitch in and work on all parts of the gyoza, it was pretty cool to see people who know their way around the kitchen working on parts of the various dishes. While it may not have been on a Shokugeki level, there’s no denying there was some definite charm in seeing Shinobu and Yagi chop up vegetables like bosses.

That and boy do I wish my dumplings came out half as perfect as Tsumugi’s did, haha.

Looking Ahead

With my wish of seeing more Shinobu and Yagi getting answered pretty quickly, I don’t think there’s much more I really could wish for. If anything, I pray that the show can keep on trucking forward at the pace it’s been going at. With a combination of cooking, adorable slice-of-life moments, and more than enough Tsumugi you could shake a stick at, it feels like the show can do no wrong.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week where maybe we’ll get to see some more of Tsumugi’s friends since she does have a party coming up soon!

  1. Avengers Gyoza Assemble!

…And the skill gap is very apparent already, despite Kouhei’s best efforts

Also, I’m sure Shinobu had good intentions of wanting to help Kotori (of not being as lonely as often).

    1. I know that Kotori gets embarrassed easily, but I thought that the half blue face and outdoor conference was a little much. From her reaction you would think that when Shinbou walked in everyone was naked. Or is it because she really is feeling guilty over her feelings for Kouhei?

      1. If I had to guess, it’s more the fact that she’s preparing dinner with her teacher and his daughter. It’s quite an unusual scenario, especially in modern day Japan, and something that might have been misconstrued as something else.

  2. When Shinbou bluntly said to Kouhei that she probably didn’t notice him at school because he was too plain, I was slightly shocked. I mean, sure, she’s brutally honest and that’s one of her qualities, but wow, that was bordering on just being plain rude, and I was annoyed for Kouhei. Thankfully, he’s mature and laid back enough not to take any real notice, but still! She redeemed herself later on for the reasons Takaii mentioned, though.
