「はじめての思い出」 (Hajimete no Omoide)
“First Memory”

Well then, that wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but it was a fun watch nonetheless! Seriously though, that tease of a new character and you don’t show us anything after the first minute?

Misunderstandings and Babies

Let me get one thing straight here — I’m not a huge fan of the whole bait-and-switch “oh THAT’S what you meant” type of humor. Maybe it’s because it takes too long or maybe it’s because the cringe factor just rubs me the wrong way, but there’s something that I really don’t like when you have misunderstandings that flow from miscommunication between characters. That said, I have to admit that seeing the pure and innocent Tama get caught up in a baby-making scenario got me to chuckle a fair bit. Something about Tama taking everything Kayo said at face value and just rolling with it felt like such a Tama-esque thing to do that I managed to push my way through all the awkwardness. That and I’ll take any opportunity to hear more Yuuki Aoi since her voice is literally something straight from heaven.

Yumine the Shut In?

Instead of getting to learn about our new red-head girl, we instead got to see just how Yumine and Tama became friends! Something that caught me a little off guard since I never thought we’d get a full blown explanation. Who would have thought that the Yumine of today was someone who couldn’t stand being around people and could look at Tama with such scary looking eyes? And sure, the start to the latter half of the episode may have started a bit slow, but by the time we hit the climax (right about when that awesome surprised OST kicked in) I’m sure all of us felt it right in the chest. Overall, good job to the show for giving us some insight into Yumine and hopefully it’ll grace us with some information on the senpais in the SNS-bu!

Looking Ahead

So, after it’s bait-and-switch, I can’t wait to see just what kind of person this fierce redhead is supposed to be. Seeing how she went out of her way to find Tama and challenge her (to an art contest I’m assuming?) though, hopefully she’ll be a fun addition to the already fun to watch SNS-bu? Anyways, I’ll catch you guys next week — see you then!

  1. A very fuwa fuwa episode… Never fails to give me that satisfied smile specially that second part. Its really interesting to know tamaki amd yumine’s history but it doesnt show how yumine turned from frail and sickly to a fujoshi (but perhaps I can just deduce that she became one due to reading manga). OST in that background is indeed nice and sweet. Definitely another good episode for the I call it, the hidden gem of the season.

  2. I think the most brilliant thing about this episode is that it strongly presents itself as a “best of and worst of” deal, and splits it cleanly into two halves.

The first half is what I determine the worst of, because I also really don’t like “Oh, that’s what you mean” humor, and the way they spend half an episode on such a premise was pretty excessive. They have jokes to tell, and sometimes, it’ll be on the forced side, but that’s just the nature of how the show is. It’ll work most times, it’ll fail other times, but the show isn’t afraid to commit to it, and I have a small appreciation for that.

And the second half is what I determine the best of, because it shows they have well-meaning intentions to give a lesson to those interested in game-making. The way they do that with showing how determined Tama was to play with Yumine to the point she’d make a game for them to play shows a sense of passion, and how it displays the roots for her to keep doing that, because she loves to see other people enjoy what she makes. It’s a joy many people can get behind, and they do it in an origin-esque story that displays a lesson for the audience and Tama’s character to carry. And it’s done in an such an innocent manner, I couldn’t help but adore it. Aside from the 40 seconds of slow dissolves the show got into near the end, I think that was pushing it a bit much, and all I could think of was “Nice dissolve” from Spaceballs lol.

But it was a good episode, it may even be my favorite episode, because it showcases what’s not all that great and great about the show in a clean manner, and not often do I see a show do something like that. It’s impressive and I’m all for seeing how this show continues on, faults and all, especially with what this new character will bring!
