「帰らぬ者と、待ち続けた者たち -dice in pot-」 (Kaeranumonoto, Machitsuketamonotachi -dice in pot-)
“Those Who Do Not Return and Those Who Are Waiting -dice in pot-“

While things may have ended on a slightly sour note, the episode as a whole was surprisingly good.

General Impressions

Even with the pacing slowing down a fair bit, I must say that SukaSuka is doing a great job at keeping both my mind and my interest piqued. All things considered, I thought I was going to be sitting here writing about how this episode felt slow with the kids being used as the one redeeming factor to make up for a lackluster transition between conflicts. Instead, we got to see numerous sides of Wilhelm all the while giving the little faeries some decent screen time.

Starting with the little faeries, it was nice to see them outside the mansion and out in the real world doing things that you’d typically find younger kids doing. From watching B+ romantic comedies to worrying about getting taller and in turn becoming adults, it provided a stark contrast to that shocking scene a few episodes back when we saw one of the girls fall off a damn cliff. If anything, the scenes served as a nice grounding point that these faeries, human weapons or not, have the same feelings and needs as everyone else. A point that I hope at some point the story focuses on since it’s such a juicy topic that it’d almost be doing the whole show an injustice if they didn’t cover it in more detail.

Changing pace, let’s talk about Wilhelm. First, did you see that masterful “adult” attitude he managed to pull off when he was escorting Tiat to the hospital? Showing just enough interest to let her know that he was listening but exerting just enough restraint to quietly remind everyone (including us) that he was in charge, it was a skillful execution of how you show someone you’re looking after that you care about them but aren’t going to baby them. Sure, you could argue that by the time the pair reached the hospital that Wilhelm had fallen into Tiat’s pace, but at this point that’s just kind of who Wilhelm is, right? That said, I think most of that was overshadowed by his reaction when he realized that Ctholly, Ithea, and Nephren were okay. Showing off that he’s no pushover, the rush of adrenaline that shot through my body as Wilhelm literally instant transmissioned to the girls was amazing. Seeing his emotions completely leak out as he embraced Ctholly, it was a great way to end an episode that felt like it wasn’t going to have much in terms of substance.

Overall, another pretty good episode for SukaSuka. And even if you include my minor gripe of Ctholly slapping Wilhelm right at the end (did she really have to slap him?), this episode had just about everything we’ve come to love about the show in a slightly different package. In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week where it looks like the pacing is about to kick up again. See you then!

  1. Tiat was adorable. Something about a little kid being a little kid in a grimy setting makes her shine even more, you know? She has super cute sound effects and that ‘trying to be all mature but really failing’ thing is great. I really hope tomorrow she comes back as Suddenly A Teenager Tiat and people (mostly Wilhelm) will have to deal with that. Please don’t just be mining our feels for a sudden tragedy or something, Shuumatsu Nani.

I was a little disappointed Wilhelm didn’t force all three girls to line up for hugs, having the deadpan girl line up for her hug obediently and the vivacious one cracking bad jokes about it would be awesome. Instead it just felt the writers were really pushing the Ctholly waifu thing. And the slap at the end was definitely overkill even for a neurotic teenager like Ctholly.

  2. Ren wins. She had what, five lines and she just stole the show. It was great to see how much she gets and is thinking about Wilhelm. Opposite that, Ctholly really should’ve let the hug go. Little ridiculous.

  3. Good episode, I actually feared the worst there a few times. Actually wondered why he only hugged Chtholly for a minute, but then remembered she’s the one designated to go boom. Considering that the mission failed with the loss of an island and how much preparation was needed for the suicide, it was actually logical to assume that she didn’t survive. Makes me wonder why she survived though. A good example of showing how family who sent their loved ones to battle might feel.

    Wonder who she is?

Where exactly is she concealing that blade?
    Two more characters to go.

Finally, yeah, I could use them cutting out that detail before the ending credits.

  4. I feel really sorry for Willhem, he was a very poweful Quasi-Brave that managed to defeat a Beast all by himself but now his body is so damaged he can´t help the fairy girls in a battle where he will more than soothed and as we witness in this episode it is killing him from the inside. An interesting infromation I got from the novel is that Willhem shouldn´t have won or even survive the battle with the Beast at all! He 11 Percival magic swords (similar to those of the Fairies)and seven incantations so powerful than just would have been enough to kill him in the spot, yet he used seven of those he´s still here! Being petrified for half a millenia looks like nothing when you consider this.
