「至近距離恋愛」 (Shikin Kyori Rennai)
“Short-Distance Relationships”

I was about to begin this excerpt with “FINALLY PROGRESSION!” until I came to my senses and realized that it was too good to be true. That or I was thinking of staring with “Senpai, Kouhai, Understand?

General Impressions

Not wasting even a minute with its short format, you have to love how Tsurezure Children goes all out with each of its skits. And while I could get into a somewhat lengthy conversation about how important it is that this show doesn’t put the wrong type of content back-to-back, I think this episode covered a wide enough range of “relationships” that nothing felt too stale.

If I had to pick my favorite of this week though, I was rather surprised just how well I resonated with Chiaki and Kana (the first couple we saw). Their easy going relationship backed with tons of silly humor was something that I really appreciated especially when you consider the crazy situations that some of the other couples get into. But what made it even better was how Kana was getting a little concerned about her current status as “girlfriend” and luckily found out that there was something terribly important blocking both her and Chiaki’s ability to become closer. And by terribly important, god I’m not sure what I would do if I was dating someone and they thought that it was a “joke” the entire time. If anything, I doubt I would have stopped at just crying. But as with everything story related, I love how the show is able to take such an awkward situation and turn it into something that not only warms your soul, but really grasps at your heart as you realize that something amazing is about to happen.

Anyways, I’ll catch you guys next week where we’ll hopefully get to find out how Chiyo’s confession to Yamane went as well as get to see some more of that suave Student Council President. See you then!

  1. Yamane might just me who likes to overthink, but then I’ve never saved anyone being groped on the train, so…

God, I love this series. Being this short I also wished it’ll bring a little more backstory or whatever to compliment the confession scenes, but hey, I’m not asking for more.

The animation studio is like “You’re our money makers, we’re your content makers. Understand?” lol

  2. The Love Master (Katori-senpai) makes his debut! He’s amazing in so many ways. (lol) I love how over the top he is.

Yamane is annoying, but he’s spot on in terms of, “Oh yeah, we were all kind of like that in high school.” Yamane cranks it up to 11, though, and it becomes kind of annoying. Even when Kurihara is trying to make some progress and be all positive and affirmative, he just has to kill the mood. It’s good writing, but he’s still one of my least favorite characters.

Sugawara has a tough road ahead, because Takano is just as bad as Yamane in terms of having low self-esteem, and being totally thick in terms of romance. (But the cleaning joke was funny.)

I’m not completely sold on the art style, mainly because it doesn’t feel as sharp as the manga style. It feels like it was run through some kind of “blobifier” that took the edges off of the art or something. But the voice acting and the writing is good enough to power through that from my POV.

And if you can’t tell, this is one of the shows I desperately look forward to every week.
