Well then — that escalated quickly.

General Impressions

Before we talk about the latter half of the episode, can we take a moment to talk about just how awesome Mordred and Shishigou are? As members of Team Red, it feels like they’ve received very little support or information (except for those few memos that came out of Shishigou’s “handy” fax machine) yet have been doing a fine job at kicking some serious ass. Be it getting ambushed by a horde of homunculuses or ending up in a two versus four, it never fails to surprise me how they manage to turn the tides in their favor every time. Don’t get me wrong — I’m normally not one for these type of “super” characters who always manage to gain the upper hand. But when it comes in the form of what feels like a third team that is trying to play by multiple rule sets, it’s tough not to root for them when they manage to come out with a win. That and even though Mordred is categorized as a Saber, I feel like that they could have easily been part of the Berserker class with the way they can just ignore damage and just charge forward. (I use they because Mordred’s gender is ambiguous, sort of. Biologically, Jack the Ripper confirmed it was a female, but I think Mordred refers to himself as a male. Not sure, going to stick with they until the story addresses this fully.)

Anyways, now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, can we also talk about that giant floating castle in the sky? While I have to call shenanigans about the Hanging Gardens being a giant castle, I suppose in the world of Fate, something that used to be considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World could be as crazy as a fortress that can float in the sky. If the characters aboard (and Ruler’s) expression were anything to go off of though, it seems pretty clear that no one expected the thing to fly. Something that I think serves as an important reminder that be it ally or foe, everyone is constantly being left out of the information loop.

At this point in the story, I’m not quite sure where things are headed. Both factions have essentially declared war and have brought the battle to each other’s doorsteps, Ruler or Jeanne d’Arc is trying to assess the situation, but is constantly one step behind the current activities, and Homunculus Sieg is trying to figure out the point of his existence and is now heading to (I’m assuming) the frontlines of battle. Among all of this we have servants from both sides who have a story to tell, except I’m not sure where it would fall into the story since there’s already so much going on. All of which come together to form this chaotic situation where just about anything could happen and we wouldn’t really know what hit us.

In any case, I’m hoping the story manages to figure out just what it’s trying to do since it’s had more than enough time to lay the groundwork of whatever is coming. I’ll catch you guys next week where we’ll hopefully get an answer to just what kind of story Apocrypha is trying to tell.

See you then!

Semiramis is definitely waifu material. I mean, you can tell that she’s doing a Medea (Fate Stay/Night Caster) thing here. It’s adorable how the prideful bitches someone becomes the most dedicated of wives.

In my mind, Semiramis and Astolfo is tied for best girl of Apocrypha.

    1. There is a reason for having that fortress as Noble Phantasm even being an Assassin.
We could also say that there is a reason she’s an Assassin even with that kind of Noble Phantasm (the oldest assassination by poison in history is attributed to her, so that’s where her class comes from), but there will be explanation, don’t worry.

As to her connection with Gilgamesh… well, Shakespeare repeatedly called her “Queen of Assyria”.
Assyria was a mesopotamian kingdom, similar and near to Babylonia. That should already make clear the answer: later historical time, almost same region as Gilgamesh

      Lelo
    2. And, as Fate has done before, Servant classes aren’t always so completely literal.

Gilgamesh, for example, was summoned as an Archer class even though he never actually uses a bow and arrow, but rather because of how his Gate of Babylon worked in launching the weaponry within almost like arrows being fired from a bow rather than, with few exceptions (like Ea), actually using any of them as they normally would be used.

Or you have Archer himself in Fate/stay night where, while he uses a bow and arrow, he is actually shown using dual swords more so than he does the bow and arrow, which is what lead to some confusion from others on what his class was.

Those cars are obviously cheaply made, what sort of car alarm doesn’t go off. Anyway, the owners must be stupid to leaves their keys in the car so thieves can drive them!
BTW, seems noticeable that Mordred is a Knight yet she isn’t against thievery.

Anyway, since Magi aren’t against stealing, I can easily imagine a lot of Magi would steal from a local museum just to steal a specific relic to summon a Servant. I can guess that the Nikola Tesla Museum is in danger of being plundered.

As usual, I am a sucker when it comes to a loving mother and child theme. Sad that there can’t be multiple winners T_T

Notably, I am not sure how the Hanging Gardens of Babylon is associated with Assassin of Red. I checked and it said that Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II was the one that made the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I think, like Vlad III with vampires or Alexander the Great being considered Zeus’s son, someone just made some fictional rubbish that had Assassin of Red associated with the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but I am not sure which one.

Anyway, I can now understand that, even if Servants don’t have a Riding Skill, it is still feasible to “ride” on something they did when alive, such as a horse.

    1. In many languages, the official name is Hanging Gardens of Semiramis, where Semiramis is most likely a misleading Greek transliteration of the name of another Assyrian queen, Šammuramat.

What makes it so retarded is the simple fact that the indestructible magic car we saw in episode 6 suffered damage in this episode.

All this does is to confirm what we have known for a long time that Kairi was wearing a Kirito’s plot convenience and armor and shitting random bullshit asspulls and plot holes in episode 6.

  3. Ok I love this series so far I have a little doubt her: How is even possible for Seminaris to have such a Nobel Phantasm!? I mean she´s an Assassin class, right? An assassin is all about stealth, camufluge, one with kills, poison and all that good stuff we know and love in fantasy but a freaking floating fortress!? Don´t missundertand, I think is awesome as hell, it´s like Shirou kotomine is saying the gloves are off!!! But i expect this kind of trick from a Caster class not an assassin.

    2. Umm, we modern people tend to associate “magic” with witches and other spellcasters, and “poison” with assassin, but in the olden days the line is quite blurry. In many cases witches are basically doing the same sh*t as an assassin and vice versa, i.e. use poison to assassinate someone. Medea for example is a great poisoner, as is Snow White’s Evil Queen.

(Or Ninja and their ninjutsu magic if you are more familiar with anime stuffs)

So, since witches basically do the same assassin-stuff as assassins, it isn’t unreasonable to think that assassins can also do the same witch-stuff as witches.

    3. Thanks Min-san and Bela-san! That sure explains a lot! But i say it again, the Heroes of this Holy Grail War sure won the spuer power lottery hard! We have Achiles, Karna and Siegfried, 3 heroes with magical protection so incredible that not even gods could make scratch on then and they are the top heroes of their mythologies; we have Chiron, the teacher and every single greek hero, Atalanta, the most badass woman to ever live, Moedred, the knight who made being a blood knight popular in Camelor before that was even a thing; we have Shekespeare, the greatest writter to ever live and Seminaris, Queen of all Poisoners that just created a freeaking floating Fortress, finally we have the Monster of Frankentein whoes cuteness is only rival by his power and Spartacus and guy that flip the bird to the entire Roman Empire!. If onlt Arturia and Gilgamesh were here and we would have the whole madness complete!.

      haseo0408
  4. Considering Semiramis is basically from the same age (Gods) as Gilgamesh (roughly) and from what I’ve seen of Medea and Tamamo, I just assume Semiramis is just as broken as those two. Also I’d bet her normal class would be Caster, so she probably is still able to use most of those skills.

If anyone’s seen Cu from Fate/Grand Order movie, he still was able to use his lancer skills. Just his primary function powers were prioritize as Caster.

Also it may be a flying fortress, but think about it. It is a Fortress you don’t know anything about. If you want to look at it one way, it is a Dungeon and she’s the Dungeon Master. Her being Assassin would make sense in that regard because she never actually harms the Player herself. But rather does everything to kill them from the Shadows, so to speak.

…probably she’s just broken as everything else seems to be from that age.

  5. It seems that no one paid pay attention to the first five minutes of episode 1, especially series opening monologue made by Sieg. (https://youtu.be/VhGRf4cjSpE)

This is no a tale about servants Siegfried, Jeanne, Chiron, Vlad, Astolfo, Avicebron, Fran, Jack, Mordred, Atalanta, Karna, Achilles, Shakespeare, Spartacus, Semiramis
nor is it a tale of masters Darnic, Gordes, Fiore, Caules, Serenike, Roche, Reika, Shirou Kotomine, Sisigou, Jean, Rottweil, Feend, Cabik, Deimlet
neither yet a tale of saints. Jeanne and Shirou Kotomine
This is a tale of people fulfilling their wishes.

    1. Once the homuncules developed enough sentience to have a will to life and seek help, he’s basically human.

Its like a slave who rose up and developed self-awareness, eventually during this battle that starts in the next episode, Sieg leads a revolution so that the other ones gain freedom, rights as well, and realize that they have a choice.

    1. After gaining Siegfried’s heart, his appearance physically changes and he gains a stronger constitution which leads Astolfo to claim he can live for more than 100 years. He has special black Command Seals which appeared on the back of Sieg’s left hand known as Dead Count Shapeshifter: Dragon Revelation Command Spells (竜告令呪, Ryū Tsuge-reiju) which allows him to take the form of the Heroic Spirit Siegfried for 180 seconds (3 minutes). He can only take form using the Command Spell for a limit of three uses. However they can be used as normal Command Seals, but does not use them that way towards Astolfo.

Dragon Revelation Command Spells (竜告令呪, Ryū Tsuge-reiju)
Dead Count Shapeshifter. The unique Command Spells engraved on Sieg. They can also be used as normal Command Spells, but there was absolutely no need for Sieg to force Astolfo to do anything with a Command Spell, so he used them all to turn himself into Siegfried. To explain it simply, they basically let Sieg summon Siegfried every time he uses one. The catalyst is Siegfried’s living heart. However, while Siegfried’s body could withstand the dragon blood within it, Sieg’s body can’t. That is reason that the spots on Sieg’s hand where the Command Spells disappeared from turned black. Even after he used them all up, power Sieg obtained from Frankenstein’s “Blasted Tree: Lightning Branch of Crucifixion” managed to barely maintain his human form, but that too was used up when Sieg used this Noble Phantasm at the end.

      1. Let’s see

        Astolfo
        – Protects a weak homunculus because it’s the right thing to do.
        – Helps him escape
        – Gives him a cool sword
        – Fights fucking Siegfried for him
        – Gets a stake shoved through his hands for his troubles but is happy because he saved the homunculus

        Jeanne
        – Cares for him because some dead guy asked her
        – Gives him shitty cookies and probably eats half
        – Leaves him with a guy with a shitty house that probably doesn’t even have a decent bathroom
        – Encourages him to do dangerous things like freeing the other homunculus while hiding her visions from him.

Literally, yes, Astolfo is the Best Girl of the series regardless of those things between his legs.

      2. In addition, someone translated some comments by original author’s novel, also scriptwriter of the anime, Yuichiro Higashide, from Animage september 2017 issue.

Animage: What kind of relationship does Astolfo have with Sieg?

Higashide: His feelings towards Sieg are passionate and frank. Incidentally, Astolfo doesn’t care about male and female gender differences at all. If he loves someone, whether they’re a man or woman is a trivial issue. If Sieg wished for it, he would have probably happily become his partner. Astolfo wholeheartedly believes that Sieg is the love of her life and love him as a man.

Ugh, disgusting. Not only is he a shota trap, he’s 100% gay.

        That’s pretty gay!

    1. on a side not : why is it that we only get to know black faction servants ? red faction is only relevant when clashing with black faction
The answer is very simple: because the main character is close to them, and some of these masters and servants will become of paramount importance for his life, and so that it can achieve its goals, fulfilling their wishes.
      such as, for example:
      Astolfo will become Sieg’s servant.
Fran is vital character for Sieg’s character development and a key character for the plot and story. Sieg will be instructed to absorb Fran’s power by the Counter Force, unlocking their ability to become into Siegfried, this is the moment when we can finally know the true the true hero of the story.
Black faction’s servants and masters who survived this battle will join the Sieg. The surviving homunculi (now they’re free, many of them developed free will, thanks to the revolution created and led by Sieg in this battle), just as the Jeanne, Mordred and Shishigou will also join the Sieg and they will form a new faction which will be led by Sieg.

ed faction is only relevant when clashing with black faction
Actually, red faction comes down to a single name, Shioru Kotomi.

This was a very important episode, because it’s the starting point for main plot and the beginning of the story of the main character.

      1. And you can be sure that if Takaii continues to post these tendentious episode reviews, which are nothing more than fanwank/headcanon based on their own tastes/wishes, the people will keep posting the spoilers as a protest form against this blatantly uninformed, immature, childish, ignorant and tendentious called Takaii.

  9. I feel sorry for some of the people commenting here…
Awwww…. they’re like little kids with their lollipops being taken away from them. Getting angry because the blog post (or the blogger) is not as good as you were expecting, or the info is not as detailed as you want it or whatever, I don’t care. Here’s some ice cream, kids XD

If you want to add information, just share it. You don’t have to call people names. (what the heck, scratch that. I’ll do the fucking same) You guys are a bunch of lowlifes, idiots, immature brats that doesn’t know anything but to criticize others. People like you disgust me. Jeez, so much negativity. Get a life!
