「そこに学校があるから, ちおちゃんと細川さん」 (Soko ni Gakou ga Arukara, Chio-chan to Hosokawa-san)
“Because School is There, Chio-chan and Hosokawa-san”

For a show that I thought was supposed to come out last season, I have to admit that having some time between reading the source material and actually watching it may have been the best thing I could have asked for.

General Impressions

God, this show is so good in such a strange way that I’m having trouble deciding how I should tackle it. At its core, Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro revolves around a girl and the insane situations that occur as she tries to make it to school on time. Situations so insane that you’ve probably thought about them when you yourself were running late trying to get somewhere! The thing is, I’m sure none (or at least most) of us have considered doing the crazy things we’ve thought about and the fact we’re getting to see it come to life on our screens may be the closest we get to experiencing those fantasies. Using the first skit as a prime example of that, I absolutely loved how we were getting a close-to-real life example of what Assassin Creeding our way to school/work would be like.

That said, I think the other strength of this show lies in its ability to bust out some great comedy based on whatever might be going on. Toss in how Chio is literally thinking at 100 miles per hour whenever something comes up (and verbalizes it) and you have jokes that can hit whether or not you really understood what was going on. So whether we’re watching an older aged man spit his suds out his window during the morning or Chio utilizing some advanced SWAT tactics to avoid creating an awkward social situation for someone else, there’s a wide range of jokes and humor that every situation can draw from.

Seeing how this is only the first episode, I’ll withhold any kind of judgment since it looks like we still have a ways to go before things really kick into full gear. That said, from what we’ve seen so far, I think this show is going to end up being one of my favorites since it seems like it’ll hit all the right notes.

Also — I apologize for how late the post is. I was stuck over at Anime-Expo working and not having stable internet is pretty lame. Huge shout out to Passerby-kun for capping the show for me and for just being awesome.

  1. I got to say this season looks really promising on the “What Do You Mean, It Wasn’t Made on Drugs?” comedy works. First we have Back Street Girls, then Asobi Asobase, then this!

  2. I was excited for this one but the result felt off to me. Either I remember the early chapters being more exciting than they really were or the adaptation’s pacing could have been a bit faster. Still going to hold out hope for the next couple episodes

  3. Had alot of fun with Chio-chan’s sense of humor, and seeing how creative she got in her first trip to school. Utilizing gaming techniques to make it easier to traverse town was clever
