OP2 Sequence

OP2: 「メグルモノ」 (Megurumono) by 寺島拓篤 (Terashima Takuma)

「ジュラの森大同盟」 (Jura no Mori no Daidoumei)
“Great Jura Forest Alliance”

What a fantastic episode to wrap up the Orc Arc.

Looking back on this week’s episode, there’s no denying that something amazing happened this week. Instead of unleashing some sort of punishment against the Orcs (which honestly would have been so far out in left field that I think we all might have died if it happened), I loved how Rimuru instead took the opportunity to unify the races of the forest into a big ol’ federation. Capitalizing on each race’s strengths, I loved how it mimicked the typical setup you’d see in any world-building game. With the foundation of a proper civilization all falling into place, it felt pretty darn good as a reward for all of Rimuru’s deeds up to this point.

However, what caught me off guard (even though I knew it was coming), was just how emotional this week’s episode was. From Geld offering himself to Benimaru on behalf of all the orcs who had committed countless atrocities and Benimaru refusing to take the head of someone as honorable as Geld, I could feel all sorts of emotions welling up in my chest (or maybe that was just congestion, who knows). But as if that wasn’t enough, even Gabiru was given a moment to really repent for what he’s done. And the best part of it all? The fact that Abiru understood exactly what happened and exercised mercy on his son. God, can this show do no wrong?

Moving on to the conclusion of this amazing episode, who would have thought we’d get a surprise appearance from Dwargo? Besides nearly forgetting that he had sent a spy to keep an eye on Rimuru, who would have thought that the Dwarven King himself would show up to see just what kind of person Rimuru was!? At the end of the day though, it was nice to see that he’s a stand up man who keeps the well being of his people at the top of his priorities.

With the Jura Tempest Federation firmly established with the backing of a very powerful nation, I can’t wait to see just how quickly things accelerate from this point. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait until next week before we’ll get a chance to see, but based on next week’s episode preview, it sounds like we’re in for a fantastic episode with the introduction of a bombshell of a character. See you then!

You see this “ninja elf” female beside the Dwarf King? I bet she is the “Espionage” section https://randomc.net/image/Tensei%20shitara%20Slime%20Datta%20Ken/Tensei%20shitara%20Slime%20Datta%20Ken%20-%20OP2%20-%20Large%2007.jpg

      1. My thinking is that (ideally) they’ll skip most of Volume 3 (except for introducing Millum) and save the big battle/conspiracy stuff for the OVA, and focus most of the rest of the season on Volume 4. This would make sense as Volume 3 involves a lot of the demon lord politics stuff that is pretty irrelevant to volume 4, but very relevant to volume 5+.

  1. God Great Sage, can this show do no wrong?
    Answer : No.

Yes, a well done episode. Abiru showed the same mercy Rimuru showed to Gabiru.
From a practical point, Abiru is Rimuru’s subordinate now (more or less) and would
follow any example Rimuru sets regarding the application of law, etc., IMHO.

One of the things common in (some) Isekai-shows seems to be that the protagonist
followers are / become secondary super fighting machines. (I don’t know a better
wording for that idea.) The best examples (that I’ve watched) are Death March kara
    Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku
and Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. where each
of the close secondary characters gets stronger and stronger. Death March’s Tama and Pochi
should be in elementary school and Smartphone’s princess (in the series) should,
well, keep being a princess (this is really clear if you read beyond the Anime series
and into the soure materials). Death March and Smartphone are still favorites to
me, but that is their basic character-growth formula.

What Slime does best, is that not every support character (to Rimuru) is a fighter.
Look at Kaijin. This episode (kinda emphasized) that he’s a somewhat out-of-shape
metal artisan, struggling to catch his breath. He didn’t suddenly become some superman
after joining with Rimuru. Same for the Holy Princess – if anything she’s become more
domestic / maternal. I think it’s this rich character-ability diversity that sets this
show well above the other Isekai’s in its past (even Overlord’s world building is more
magical (you know – a snap of the fingers) that practical hard work).

I’m probably over-simplifying but hopefully you’ll see the point.

I think it’s these mostly “unnoticed details” that resonate with viewers and really
provide that foundation for the story. I think there’s a lot of Bumping the Lamp
in Slime that without it, it would definitely feel off or not as good as a series.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with every difference between this adaptation and
its sources, but the heart has been really captured and there seems to be love in
their animation of the source. I haven’t seen any garbage or poorly drawn characters
in any of its episodes so far.

That said, I can’t wait for Milan to show up. Gonna be great!!!

      1. looks pretty probable setup…
the elf/ninja girl, the wizened old sage and army commander guy are pretty obvious, not sure about the “support” type, he can be in charge of trade or overall economic advisor…
now with relations officially established trade should flourish soon btw

  2. The Milim is coming! Run for your lives! And your popcorn XD

As many viewers commented, this episode feels like Rimuru is playing Civilization. Building! Progressing through the technology tree! Increasing the population! And also, diplomacy.

Many were surprised that King Gazel appeared so hostile at first, despite having said in a previous episode that it was a shame they lost an opportunity to befriend that slime. Or in this very episode, saying that Rimuru’s new nation could be a threat to the dwarves. But it’s all very in character with Gazel.

“Diplomacy is all about bluffing”, he will say in the future. “Good things do not come to those who wait; they’re taken by those who persist.”

Think about it: instead of showing he’s afraid of Rimuru’s power, he came directly to him with a full retinue. Heck, even the fact that he came from above, in flying horses, seems an attempt to showcase his power. He boldly challenged Rimuru to a duel and called it a test of character. In truth, Rimuru could have been inept with a sword and it wouldn’t prove a thing about his power or character. It would only prove that King Gazel is an excellent swordsman (which probably was the point). Before anyone can realize it, the king has already imposed his terms on the meeting, and Rimuru is glad to pass a test he wasn’t obliged to pass to begin with.

King Gazel would do well in Westeros, I think.

    1. He still knew when to concede on things, too. Once Treyni showed up Gazel knew better than to try to keep pressing that Rimuru might be evil or boasting so that he didn’t piss off the whole forest, and basically admitted that the test was just because he was curious. I was glad the anime toned down his attitude, cause I remember in the manga he pretended to be a lot more of an arrogant ass that I wanted Rimuru to say “screw swords” halfway though the fight and just roast him with magic.

Yes, that was reasonable of him. Interestingly, it also addresses one of the issues that have come up about Rimuru’s position: legitimacy.

From an outsider’s point of view, Rimuru is a suspiciously powerful slime that has claimed a part of the forest on his own without any warning. First it was goblins, then wolves, now ogres and orcs… At no point does Rimuru ask for permission, or clarify if there are previous owners or claimants. He just does it, long before he knew of the dryads. A nation of monsters with no affiliation appearing in previous “neutral” ground? No wonder King Gazel isn’t thrilled. Until Treyni appeared, he couldn’t know that Rimuru had the dryads’ approval.

In fact, that’s also another reason for him to be an arrogant jerk. He has the right to be arrogant because he’s a legitimate king who also respects the legitimacy of others (in this case, the dryads), but won’t have the same sympathy for illegitimate upstarts: “Since you boasted of being the chancellor of this forest, it seems I must teach you, exactly, where you stand!”.

        Mistic
    2. I think it was an old China thing:

      – Feed some and you just have Heads without Legs (Nobles)
      – Feed an hole Nation and you have an Country on your back

So Welfare is not only for “Nobles” to become more richer

  3. While the episode was great and just keeps reaffirming my faith in this show(still not a huge fan of Gazel, but finally an MC that pays attention), I’ll take a second to say I love the new OP.

First off, it’s great, so yay! Second, it makes me stop worrying about pacing. Show Spoiler ▼

was either someone jumping the gun in the first OP, or we’ll end with her getting a tease at the very end or something(I refuse to jinx things by assuming the “ss” words). Ending with finishing the kids arc is much more reasonable and assures me that the awesome pacing and quality that I want all “Isekai” adaptations to study like it’s THE friggen Masters course will continue throughout.

It’s all good new, and I like good news.

      1. @Mockman: a “name” is a funny thing. I forget what exactly he used, but it was something along the lines of where the Orc was from plus their gender and a number. “HM1” is a name if he says it’s a name, and it has the exact same benefits as all the other names.

Not great, but the Orcs were fine with it. *shrug*

  4. The best of all is that already in the next episode Milim will appear what should say it because he is an important character not only because of his charisma but because he is the one who shows that Rimuru is not really the strong and unbeatable character that everyone thinks
