「何マジで拾ってんのさ」 (Nani Maji de Hirottennosa)
“I Can’t Believe You Picked It Up”

Never in my life have I wanted to punch (or watch get punched) a character more than I wanted to during this week’s episode of Fruits Basket.

General Impressions

Oh. My. God. Never in my life have I wanted to smack someone as much as I wanted to smack Hiro. As someone who has watched a lot of anime, all of which have had some annoying or downright terrible characters, this was probably the closest I’ve come to attempting to phase my hands into a different dimension in order to shake some sense into a character. God, even with the flimsy defense that he’s a stupid sixth grader, his obvious intelligence (and uncanny ability to understand those around him) makes it even worse that he attempts to use that as cover. Man, if I had a child like that I feel like I’d have done something (possibly illegal) to get the idea that behaving like that is not okay.

Luckily, just as with almost everyone else in the series, we got to see Tohru work her magic just like she normally would. As the guiding light of the episode, I’m not sure I would have been able to handle more than two seconds of Hiro’s insults and foul mouth without Tohru doing her absolute best at being kind and understanding. If I were to go a little deeper than that though, I guess I can sympathize with him unleashing all of his negative feelings toward Tohru since she’s the only one he could realistically do it with. Since if I’m being honest, I don’t know how well most kids would handle watching the head of their household brutally beat the person that they went and tried to be upfront about.

At the end of the day, I have to hand it to Fruits Basket for giving me such a stressful episode that managed to hit both ends of the pleasure-pain spectrum within a single episode. Looking back at it, I guess Hiro’s behavior wasn’t all that bad when you factor in all the various things that lead to that point. That and as a fan of all forms of tsundere, Hiro’s behavior at the end when he ended up paying for the crepes just felt so good that I couldn’t help but smile as we watched him start the journey to being a better version of himself.

In any case, I’ll catch you guys next week. See you then!

    1. I don’t think I’ve heard explicitly that the next series is in preproduction yet. Maybe there will be a concrete announcement after this anime ends. I know they want to animate the whole manga, but they also wanted to animate the whole FMP light novel, so I’m not counting my chickens yet.

This two-cour season will probably cover about the same amount as the old two-cour anime, which is about a third of the manga.

    2. It’s got a *lot* of material left to cover. First season is likely going to end with Volume 6’s events like the first series did.

It’s definitely going to be more than 1 more season, though. They’ve said the series will be around 60 episodes, iirc.

  1. Yo! Is it normal to feel like you want to punch this brat in the mouth? I swear if this kid keeps acting high and mighty he’s going to get wrecked.

In this episode if you paid attention, Kyou and Yuki were of no help what so ever. I think this punk was suppose to be Touru’s huge critic and rightfully so.

How do you intend for Touru to challenge Akito if Touru’s values are not challenged.

  2. I think somebody needed to call out the brat on the false dychotomies he kept sprewing.
Some sound logic would serve him better than a slap to face.
His acerbic attitude is but a shadow of much greater evil, and its name is Akito.
Now is someone I would love to punch.

  3. You’ve pretty much summed up the feelings I had during this episode Takaii. God I wanted to punch that brat for being so bratty and rude to Tohru, the sweetest person ever. But the end did make a twist and explained his behaviour. Though, that doesn’t mean acting like that is permitted.
