「俺は、言う時は言う」 (Ore wa, iu toki wa iu)

It might not have been a Pansy masterclass. But the Cosmos redemption arc was nothing short of sublime. First off, I’ll admit most people probably would have realised that Asunaro was behind these incidents – especially since a post ED scene showed her in a printing room with a suspicious smirk. But to pin her down and cut off every escape route is no small feat and Cosmos utterly defeated Asunaro at her own game. She really did learn from the fiasco that kickstarted this series, and has come a long way from being a naive and gullible maiden in love. And so the villain of our set piece reveals that she’s been in love with Joro all along – ever since that fated baseball game where he happened to block a stray ball that was about to hit her. That said, trying to ruin your crush is definitely not the right way to go about winning his heart. Not so surprisingly, Joro activates his jerk mode the moment everything comes to light and harshly shuts her down – though it’s ultimately to spare her feelings by generating a dissonance from what she perceived an idealised version of him to be.

Do I feel sorry for Asunaro? Not particularly. Those kind of slanderous allegations can seriously ruin a person’s reputation. School being a small society, once word gets around and with kids being cruel, it really could have been a lot worse – like Joro being relentlessly bullied and abused before the previous misunderstandings were resolved. If you truly loved a person, you’d never look to hurt them like that for the sake of self gain. On the other hand, Cosmos has definitely grown to possess feelings towards Joro after everything that he did for her, and selflessly went about her business trying to clear his name. Hopefully, she’s demonstrated to Asunaro the right way to approach one’s own feelings, in terms of managing the jealousy that will invariably arise when other girls become involved.

But at the end of the day, when all is said and done, I’m glad Asunaro convinced Kamata to drop out of the dance. That left space for our final participant to join the fray. We were rewarded with an extremely entrancing Pansy who graced us with her other-worldly beauty. Of course, Cosmos and Himawari looked amazing as well. But our main girl was really something else. And the group (including Sun-chan) go out of their way to try and make it up to Joro for last time. Maybe they aren’t as terrible as I’d believed, since human relationships are always fraught with difficulties that are meant to be overcome. That said, this series being this series and seeing how we’re only halfway through, I seriously doubt that the drama’s come to an end. There’s definitely a lot more spiciness to come down the line. Anyway, that’s about everything I wanted to discuss. As always, thanks for reading my post and see you next week to find out how the next arc kicks off!

  1. Wow, I assumed it would be Pansy to save Joro again, but as usual the show has a way of subverting expectations. Cosmos has learned much about manipulative bastards/bitches since her introduction into series, and has put that knowledge into rescuing Joro.
Best fourth wall moment of the episode: “Why it is always that damned baseball match????”
Asunaro has been served her just desserts but I think it is not the last we will be seeing her – there is always possibility that she will end up having her own redemption episode… After all she is nice addition to Joro’s intended harem…

  2. We’ve covered all the cardinal points in that damn match. What’s next, the inter-cardinals?
Because if the OP is anything to go by, another girl was watching it, so I’ll bet a bench this game isn’t out of the picture yet.

  3. None of the heroines have been “redeemed” yet though?
Like… the show’s pretty obvious that the characters are aware of the emotions people around them are aiming at them.

Do you think Cosmos is exempt? The childhood friend and Cosmos both probably knew how Joro felt about him and led him along. I doubt they’ll turn out to be good people by the end of the show.

  4. There’s something really special about this show. I can’t remember if it was the last or two episodes ago oh, but there was a Cowboy Bebop reference in one of the background songs and I can’t forget how awesome that is. Every episode is doing an amazing job of leaving me wanting for more while still being pleased with what I got.
