“I Enrolled in the Magic Academy…”

Corona-chan might be overstaying her welcome at this point by single handily devastating the spring and summer anime rosters, but at least we can all rest easy knowing Hamefura has seemingly avoided the party hangover. Which is a very good thing mind you, for besides having something new to watch weekly (who knew that would be a thing!) we’re finally getting to Hamefura’s meat and potatoes, and oh boy what a glorious stew it’s looking to be.

With the prologue now concluded the main issue facing Katarina is the presence of Maria Campbell. Cute; blonde; commoner baking charm: it’s a lethal combination in the right hands, and also the combination which just so happens to be the trigger Katarina must disable if she is to actually stay alive. So naturally in pure Bakarina fashion she overthinks, overestimates, and hilariously winds up beating the love hammer thoroughly over her competition’s head. And you thought the yuri baiting would be restricted to Mary only, hah! Katarina might be right to maintain her yeoman contingencies (because the future is dark and full of Council-specified terror), but methinks the planning is a little excessive. After all, when you’re this much of an adorable muffin loving dork, there’s little fear of being given the short end of the stick.

What I’m most looking forward to though is how Maria’s presence winds up affecting Katarina’s relationships, particularly male, because some of these are going to get very interesting. Geordo’s perversions for example are going to become a running gag soon enough, as between his sweets and chill strategy and Keith’s permanent presence we’re looking at some serious sexual tensions building up. Then there’s the matter of Alan who you know full well is not going to keep those feelings hidden for long—alongside Nicol’s more subtle crushing. And Mary? Well, I think that needs no explanation. Katarina may be inadvertently directing some of her harem towards the ending she’s desperate to avoid, but given the changes already made for Maria, don’t expect this love story to play out the way anyone expects.

When it comes to the Bakarina, the future is truly a great unknown.
