「約束」 (Yakusoku)
“Promise”

You know what, if Hina can get an episode to herself then dammit so can Lynn! Or at least that’s what I imagine the thought process was this week because between utterly shocking resurrections (not) and surprising (only slightly) confessions of love we more or less got the endgame for Plunderer’s climax. Doan is going to lose, Sunohara will be sent to rehab, and Licht’s fight against floating island tyranny will be firmly left for the manga. Don’t deny, you know you’re looking forward to it.

Considering the recent solidification of Licht’s harem courtesy of confession a la Nana it was only fair that pairing options got slimmed down, even if it had to come at the expense of Lynn. Frankly the girl never stood a chance from the start, but through strength of will (or just sheer stubbornness) managed to hold onto the impossible until now in favour a slim miracle. While technically true Lynn isn’t out of the running given the lack of tangible rejection, it’s a pretty good place overall to drop her from the running: Lynn’s confession helped bring Licht back from the dead, opened the albino voyeur’s eyes to his one true pairing, and finally gives Pele the chance to seal the deal. Plunderer is no romance show, but tying up such lose ends always feels satisfying.

In terms of actual meat and potatoes, however, there’s set to be a little more spice on the menu. Sunohara’s surprise reappearance points to further Schmerman shenanigans, because you don’t mention drugs and just assume our least willing murderer happened to take them on a whim. Does it mean we’ll actually see Schmerman show his face during this latest bout? Unlikely, but I expect some more details on that Alcia preservation plan before all is said and done. For all we’ve learned about the history of Alcia there’s still plenty of secrets regarding its inner workings to be revealed and even more regarding current character motivations and immediate plans for the future. I highly doubt we’ll find out everything in these last two weeks, but hey you never know.

Sometimes the greatest twists emerge from the most unsuspecting of circumstances.

  1. Wowzers! Despite the sudden flip switch of Hina’s determination and constant beliefs that leads to generic and lengthy shounen-esque dialogue, it’s a good watch seeing Lynn’s own screentime even if she didn’t care she dies young.

Luckily and weirdly enough, the Homhoughh villagers are there to give her support, emotionally especially. I’m guessing that Veggie Lady is an Ace because even if Jail says in front of them that an Ace can’t be 300+ years old, she sounds so confident they exist which can only mean one thing…the 7th Ace has appeared already? But vaguely?

I guess it’ll be revealed if there’s a season renewal. As far as I peek at source material and manga readers’ comments at some place, the whole battle scene is anime original so I can’t put my hopes up for I’m still let down by Tokyo Ghoul’s own anime original storyline.

Yet why I think the screenwriter is able to adapt into something better even if all the exposition is mostly cut out from this arc? I guess he knows the original scene of Sonohara’s entry will hit the wrong buttons (Hint: Russian Roulette to the head seems unsuitable for vulnerable teens watching it) if you get what I mean. So I believe the scene where she enters, even if it’s sudden and vague, seems to fit in properly.

Only two more episodes to see what kind of cliffhanger should we expect.
