「ネクロマンサー」 (Nekuromansaa)
“Necromancer”

Well guess we don’t have to worry about things slowing down anytime soon. From the innocent mouths of babes to full on necromancy, Munou na Nana is really (quite literally) going for the kill right now with the speed at which Nana’s plans are running headfirst into brick walls. I’m not about to say Miss Murder Buns is soon to meet her doom, but at this rate something is certainly going to have to give.

As promised last time, Michiru’s little discovery of Nana doing bad things proved to be just another innocent nothingburger. What, Tsunekichi’s photos always predict the future? Well not if they’re from a dream turned fantasy! Oh yeah, it’s one hell of a copout which happens to take full advantage of Michiru’s chronic naivety (while leaving Nana looking better in her eyes), but credit where credit is due, at least it’s a sensible copout. Having Nana eliminate Michiru now would probably work fine given how the Enemies of Humanity works as an excuse, but that would simply highlight just how contrived Kyouya’s state of mind is getting. Before Nana’s increasingly precarious web of lies collapses the series is going to want to give her enough rope to hang herself (for maximum payoff), but getting to that point while somehow staying on the rails might prove challenging.

Case in point for this aspect is Nana’s latest slipup with Yuuka and Shinji. While definitely a shocker and a fantastic bit of suspense (inkling or not, I honestly didn’t see that side coming from Yuuka), there is no way Nana succumbs to this trap so the question—and concern—is how she gets out and back on the murdering path. Michiko was easy to deal with after all, but eliminating a crazed necromancer in this position and coming up with a suitable excuse to explain it all away? No matter the Chekhov’s guns conveniently lying around, you can only stretch these developments so far before suspension of disbelief grows too challenging to maintain. Especially when Kyouya is rapidly approaching the point where he will have to settle on a culprit.

Munou na Nana has been doing a great job so far in ratcheting up the tension, but the real test (and the real fun) is in what happens next.

  1. Well, well. This show is getting wilder and more ridiculous, but despite that fact, I’m actually enjoying it. I don’t think this show will turn out great as a whole, but at least this managed to entertain me, flaws and all. I never expected necromancy to appear in this series, which makes me wonder what other outrageous and insane abilities the others may have not yet revealed.

    1. It’s pretty much pure fun over any sort of realism, but that’s not a bad thing IMO. As long as the show can keep Nana’s murderous rampage entertaining it all works in the end, it’s just a question of whether it can and we won’t know that until a trip happens unfortunately!

    1. I don’t see how the Necromancer here is painted as a bad gurl. She is a bit messy in the head, but she still wanted to hand Nana to the classmates.

The Time Traveler (with his OCD) and the Necromancer (with her romantic obsession) do however show signs of being potentially dangerous if pushed over the edge in future (while the Photographer was a bad person). Still not a justification for the killing, but for a psychopath like Nana it’s enough.

    2. The show is painting them as bad (largely to justify Nana’s actions and make her into an antihero at worst), but it’s debatable how well it’s working. As Nayrael points out a lot of these kids aren’t bad unless pushed, which then gets us down into the weeds of whether potential risk is a suitable excuse for preemptive action. Nana and her employers clearly believe so, but there’s nothing so far to make this a simple black and white argument.
