Legend:

Now that every show has had a few episodes to make its case, it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Spring 2021 blogging schedule.

As per illustrious tradition, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . or at least should be, but with multiple episodes under our belts, we’re pretty confident in our picks. Will some of them fall flat in the home stretch? Probably. This is what we’ll stick with for now, barring any unforeseen changes in the near future.

With this being our first season seeing a swath of new recruits eager and excited to help (no newbie prodding required, I swear!) I am very happy with the slate we’ve assembled. Although a few series have unfortunately slipped through the cracks again (as real-time commitments is wont to mess with these days), it’s a sign that winter is behind us in more than one way; next season is certain to be even better coverage-wise, and not just because I’m an overly optimistic thinker!

In other news expect RandomC to start dipping its toes into video-making water in the not-too-distant future. Some eagle-eyed watchers may have already noticed we now have an official Youtube channel, and while I cannot give an exact date for our first video premiere, keeping an eye out in the next few weeks is a pretty good idea. Although it’ll also be featured in a separate post on the site, so I guess you don’t need to watch too hard. Maybe.

Before I start hyping up new things too much though I’ll just sum it up with a big thank you all as always. Random Curiosity wouldn’t be the same without you popping in to say hi, so make sure you stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy the arrival of longer days and plentiful sunshine once again. And heck maybe even some fantastic anime to boot! Never doubt the potential new seasons can bring.

4/25 Edit: For lovers of all things bullying Choya has found the time to add Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san! to his coverage picks. Your reaction face folder may now rest easy.

  1. Regarding the Youtube channel, a podcast would be nice and relatively easy to make. Certainly I would like a lot to hear the various reviewers exchange opinions outside the usual reviews on the site!

    1. Podcasts definitely are one of the things we’re considering, we just need a period of relative tranquility to get a group of us together to discuss things. Being located across the globe doesn’t help things either!

  2. Looking forward to another good season. Mildly disappointed that neither Hige nor Koikimo are getting coverage but very pleased that Jouran is, along with the one true idol show.

    Mockman
    1. also disappointed that Higehiro gets snubbed (not surprising for RC anymore) but the one who did do the first impression post said that she did not expect the content that would greet her there.

I still want someone to push the envelope and do Higehiro.

  3. Le sigh… Edens Zero gets passed over by another reviewer. Dunno if it’s because the localization is being held by Netflix, or if too many people just see it as more Fairy Tail, or both, or what. I just really wish I could see more people see the anime gradually exceed the expectations set by its beginning the same way the manga did.

    SZS
    1. The localization is admittedly part of the reason; similar to Godzilla S.P. a few of us passed it over given the subs timing. Also considering Edens Zero is likely to run more than 1-2 seasons it’s difficult to commit when you don’t know what your schedule will be like in 12-24 months.

  4. Covered shows:
Sentouin, Hakenshimasu! – To quote one Austin Powers, “Yeah baby, yeah!”
Zombieland Saga: Revenge – Have yet to watch the third episode (not easy when the Hololive VTuber rabbithole has you), but I’m liking how the new season’s going so far. Just hope they didn’t forget about the subplot from last season.
SSSS.Dynazenon – I’m probably out of my depth with the mythology gags/references in this show, but I do appreciate the homages to live-action tokusatsu (similar to SSSS.Gridman before it).

Will still watch even if not covered:
CESTVS: The Roman Fighter – Remember how I said the CG in the teaser trailer gave me Berserk (2016-2017) flashbacks and that I might not stick around for long on this show? I’m doing a 180 on that statement. After watching the first episode, it turns out not all of CESTVS is reliant on CG animation, as there are scenes that are beautifully animated. That being said, I do hope the trailer didn’t turn off people from giving this show a chance (marketing this series with a CG trailer was not the way to go–especially after Berserk (2016-2017)), as it may also serve as a litmus test for the feasibility of more historical period piece anime (Ad Astra: Scipio to Hannibal, or perhaps another season of Vinland Saga). Also, it’s basically Hajime no Ippo or Baki the Grappler…in sword-and-sandal Ancient Rome.
Higehiro – Yes, I know the classic ecchi fantasy of a salaryman taking in a cute, runaway high-school girl is part of the appeal/hook of this series, but the characters (most of them, anyway) are actually well-written and each have their own complex personal issues. Not to mention Yoshida and Sayu’s interactions so far are tastefully done (occasional fanservice shots aside).

May drop depending on how the third episode presents itself:
Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san – Upon hearing that Sumire Uesaka was cast as Nagatoro, I expected smug, sadistic vibes and a voice similar to Azur Lane‘s Deutschland. But two episodes in and it turns out Nagatoro’s more of a kusogaki (a kusogaki in a teenage girl’s body, to be precise) than a full-on sadist. Hell, she’s even more of a kusogaki than (Garlic Witch) Shion Murasaki! That said, I couldn’t help but chuckle at Nagatoro borrowing Uzaki-chan‘s “flesh fang.”

    On hold, yet to watch:
    86–EIGHTY-SIX
Osananajimi ga Zettai ni Makenai Love Comedy

Anyway, best of luck with the YouTube channel. Considering you’re competing for viewer engagement with the likes of the Trash Taste crew, similar AniTubers and especially VTubers, you’re gonna need it.

    1. If any of the staff are shy about showing themselves on video on a Youtube channel they could always go the V Tuber route. Haven’t a clue how difficult that would be for them to set up but It would probably be a good option.

      Lyfe
      1. Oh trust me that’s an option I wouldn’t mind exploring at all. No better way to stand out than by doing something no other anime review/discussion space hasn’t considered before 😛

Also to get technical for a moment model rigging isn’t that difficult now. Outside of initial investment for the camera tech it’s pretty cheap if you don’t need an absolutely perfect or insanely unique model; Steam for example already has a few freeware programs available for generic model creation and lots of artists are now open for this sort of commission given the recent popularity. It’s just a matter of getting some interested in doing it.

      2. Since we’re on that topic anyway, is the Hololive VTuber creation app still a thing? (Can’t find it anymore on the Google Play store, but the Apple version is still up.)

Also, do you currently know any artists/Live2D modelers who can (possibly) make VTuber avatars out of the RC crew?

        Incognito
      1. Well, screw me sideways. *sighs*

Reminds me of “Triple-AYYY” video games promising players with potentially good gameplay, and then hitting them in the head with truckloads of paid DLC (downloadable content) and MTX (microtransactions), and making said gameplay a shallower, less satisfying experience. (Tangent: Despite seeing good stuff about Diablo II: Resurrected–thanks to Technical Alpha playthroughs by Hololive’s Botan and Kiara, as well as Dbrunski125 and MrLlamaSC–there’s a part of me that remains wary of Activision-Blizzard BS.)

Back to CESTVS, will the story still be engaging? Can’t say. At this point, I’ll probably still watch it just to see if the CG turns out to be better (and less janky) than Berserk (2016-2017). Would the newer season of Baki or Kengan Ashura be a better comparison, story- and animation-wise?

On a different note, almost forgot:

Will still watch even if not covered:
Godzilla: Singular Point – I kinda like the show’s sense of foreboding (reminiscent of the initial season/chapters of Shingeki no Kyojin) and mystery about the emergence of strange (new?) creatures, as well as (apparently) an element/unobtainium that defies the traditional laws of physics/science (then again, Godzilla is considered sci-fi). Despite being one of those “Just here for Godzilla” viewers, I still hope that sense of foreboding pays off once Godzilla appears.

    2. Don’t watch Osananajimi ga Zettai ni Makenai Rabukome, I’ve seen every episode except for the last and it’s the most frustrating, bland thing ever. Boring main character, completely “one word here would solve the love triangle” love triangle bullshit, boring character motivations, it’s just the worst thing ever after episode 3. The very forward osananajimi was somewhat cute for two episodes and the Yukinoshita Yukino/Kasumigaoka Utaha character was fine but then the show just digs itself into a stupid corner. Higehiro and Koi to yobu ni ha are mediocre but completely watchable.

  5. I’m not really hyped for anything this season and I think compared to whats coming in the Summer the Spring season is a bit meh.

On another note the most Ilblu arc on Made in Abyss is like 95 percent done and with the authors slow release schedule it should be finished by the fall(Probably 2-3 chapters left at most). Kinda excited for a movie announcement for the series at some point this year(Which I think will probably just cover the whole 6th layer).

    Lyfe
  6. I will say, the more that I watch it, I am kinda disappointed that Shadows House isn’t being covered. It really is a unique series, unlike anything else airing this season.

    hjerry
    1. This season is brutal because, on a quieter season, Shadow’s House would’ve been one I’d want to cover cause it has such a cool, eerie atmosphere. But the weekend is packed this time around and I got too attached to the ones I currently have so it ended up slipping through my hands.

      Choya
      1. I’ve haven’t even fully decided if I like yet or not. It’s so weird that I find it hard both to describe it and even to quantify it. Is it bad? Is it good? What do you even compare it to in order to make those determinations? I feel like it might be a series that I watch all the way through and then, at the end, just go, huh, well that was a thing that I watched, and genuinely not know how to describe what I even experienced.
