「ひらけ、同窓会」 (Hirake, Dousoukai?)
“I Guess, This Is a Class Reunion?”

Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka?’s nineteenth episode confirms one notion that’s been on my mind about Filmos regarding her involvement in some seedy activity as Shun’s exploration of elf territory unveils her complicit role in helping Potimas kidnap her reincarnated students. On Kumoko’s end, we also see that her newfound sainthood has gotten to her head as she has a tricky time taking down the Mother Spider.

Potimas has positioned himself as an antagonistic character with both his interest in abducting the reincarnations and wanting to kill Sophia, but Filmos’ role in helping begs to question her knowledge of the other students’ whereabouts. It also begs to question how she’s aware of the students that didn’t survive in this new world and how many might’ve been murdered in captivity or to avoid captivity.

It’s easy to see why there’d be some animosity on the students’ end for Filmos, Potimus, and the other elves that approved of abducting them. Although they seem to be living off of supplies they are given, most of their lives have been spent under their thumbs in this new world as opposed to the other reincarnations that were lucky enough to be able to attend a magical academy for all the cool kids.

I guess if there’s any consolation, it’s finding out that other students were able to survive outside of the prison camp and that Shun happened to get reincarnated as a hero that wants to free them. That, and finding out Ooshima got reincarnated as an attractive woman, which fascinates the girls and makes the guys want to risk it all. On the flipside, the girls also have to deal with Fei being back and sassier than ever, but you take what you can get sometimes.

Meanwhile, Kumoko’s on-screen time has been hilarious in this episode as the village she’s occupying, for the time being, is going gaga over her. Seeing the life-like version of Kumoko twitching her eyes as she kept getting offerings for blessing the village was a riot, as was the treatment she received such as having merchandise that actually looks like the cute self-image of Kumoko, holding babies as if she’s a pope or a politician, posing for paintings, having 24-hour security onhand. Kumoko’s exasperated ranting being treated like a religious blessing on her behalf was also very funny.

But it’s not all sugar and rainbows for her as her hubris causes her to jump into a fight with a weakened Mother Spider that ultimately came at the cost of her Body Brain. But while the loss of the Body Brain is one price she paid, there is also the threat of instability that keeps on looming over every action Kumoko takes as it’s yet another action to push Ariel to frustration as she one-shots a dragon, setting the stage for Ariel to amp up her vengeance against Kumoko for her series of transgressions.

  1. The biggest revelation is that Potimas, who we saw killed, is alive.

I can’t wait for the reaction the anime-only viewers will have when they find out why, likely in the last two episodes of the season.

  2. Piece of shit dark elves are pieces of shit, surprise surprise, even shitty selfish teacher degraded to a point of kidnapping her ex-students to “bring everyone together”. Honestly i am more interested in Hugo’s perspective than this party. And finally someone addresses Ariel’s washing detergent name, can’t get over the CGI though.

    1. Just wanted to add, if there are Elves that ever deserved to be raped in anime, it’s these fuckers, their entire species needs to be turned into sex slaves for all eternity. And don’t give me “it’s only a few” everyone seems to gladly follow their shitty leader with a grin on their faces, if opposing faction of elves ever appear, i will take my words back.

  3. Is this still basically two different stories with the spider girl doing her own thing without interacting with the other characters?
Everytime I see a new blog post for this show I’m wondering whether I should pick it up.

    1. Yeah, it has a dual story structure in which it’s not immediately evident how the events of the two halves are connected in terms of progression. Your enjoyment will depend mostly by how much you like the main character (personally i love Kumoko), because the human side, while not aggressively bad or anything, is fairly uninteresting, but necessary as building blocks for the story. Give it a try!

  4. Sad to see Potimas still alive. Still don’t know what exactly is Sofia’s beef with him. At least it hints that he didn’t manage to get his hands on her.

Getting the feeling that White is actually body brain, does a long term split from the main mellow their personality? Would be fun if Black is Shun’s friend Kyouya. Probably need to check out previous episode to check who’s who.

When one of your male class mates suddenly changed into a hot babe. What would you do? hmmm.
Still loved the class reps reaction when she heard her/his real name. XD
