Ore Tsushima – 01

This is for those of you who have absolutely no spare time to watch or binge a full Netflix comedy series. However, you’d also need to love, know, or have an interest in felines. This is the story of Tsushima (Ootsuka Akio), a talking stray cat with no boundaries.

Kitty sass is widely known and appreciated across the internet. This series of shorts is clearly aiming to capitalize on that knowledge to bring a smile to viewers’ faces by juxtaposing our hero feline with an undefined old lady he dubs Ojii-chan (Tanaka Mayumi) unaware of her gender. The cutout animation is one of the reasons I decided to give this series some time and it lends nicely to the tone. The style was quite popular in the nineties with series’ like South Park or Angela Anaconda, so it struck a nostalgic chord. I do also appreciate the humor in those shows which I think is further enabled by the style. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so scripting and storytelling can be forgiven off the bat. Not that there is anything to forgive in this 1-minute long episode.

The premise is reminiscent of Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. but with a less polished and story-heavy approach. This is definitely niche but you can expect that I’ll review another one or two episodes before letting it breathe on its own within the anime community. If you’re looking for some dry humor and a bunch of talking cats, this one might be just what you need.
