「ドゥルジ嬢は悦ばない!」 (Duruji Jou wa Yorokobanai!)
“Druj Is Not Happy!”

The latest episode of Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! ended up being very exciting to watch because of the progress Jahy makes as she secures buckets and buckets of mana crystals. At the same time, it’s the most direct the show has been with regards to how far Jahy has come considering how Druj is starting to notice a different, compassionate side to her.

A BEACH EPISODE ON HALLOWEEN

The episode’s first segment was a funny yet practical look at Jahy’s state of mind as she goes about her latest crystal hunt differently. While she plays hooky from her responsibilities to find mana crystals at the beach, she actually does more good for the world than harm.

In the process of finding her haul of crystals, she saves countless lives on the beach and ended up purifying the beach by removing the mana crystals that have since brought bad luck to the beach and the yakisoba shop that the Barkeep’s uncle owns. It was a hilarious way to show the approach the anime likes to take with Jahy’s unintentional kindness by having her take on several philanthropic tasks as she goes about her selfish journey for conquest. Even if she was never paid as she would’ve hoped, she was greatly rewarded for her kindness on lifeguard duty with a mother lode of crystals.

WHAT IS LOVE ANYWAY?

The second half of the episode was interesting to me because of how it forces Jahy to see how living a human life would change her mindset. Druj might have the Stockholm-esque tendencies of internalizing her enjoyment of the cruel treatment she used to get from Jahy, but it lends itself to Jahy’s characterization for her to start noticing that being on Earth has made her less sadistic.

Without even thinking about it, Jahy asks Druj to have a seat with her and relax, as if it comes naturally to her to want Druj not to work herself to the bone for her pleasure. Empathy never came easy to Jahy, and many of her good deeds on earth are still rooted in her desire for crystals. But so much has happened to her that the last thing on her mind is to treat Druj like she’s lesser, especially when her friend is well-off and she’s had to hustle to have the very few mana crystals she does have.

She’s within inches of fessing up that she’s embellished her life on earth, but Druj’s honesty about wanting to be mistreated shows that Jahy has had an easier time assimilating to her life on Earth. Druj might be book-smart enough to be a wealthy businesswoman, but she hasn’t had the interest to channel the same desire she got from Jahy’s mistreatment towards any other passions. Even if Jahy had to become street-smart to think about the suffering of others differently, it’s a little sad to see that Druj might not be able to find happiness without having Jahy play the role of her sadistic boss no matter how successful she is in Japan.

  1. Kinda sad that Druji only experience true happiness when she was abused by Jahy. Instead of seeking a healthy form of enjoyment I have the feeling that the anike will double down on her “tendencies” and call it comedic.

  2. Jahy inadverently was doing the work of Magical Girl…
Saving people? Check. Removing misfortune-bringing mana crystals from ecosystem? check.
No wonder Druj felt something was off….
