「見えてるもの」 (Miteru Mono)
“The Things She Sees”

Mieruko-chan’s past episodes have focused mainly on the daily ordeals Miko has to contend with, but Episode 08 presents new obstacles that can’t be easily be avoided by walking away. Even with the changing room ghosts and ax-wielding murder ghosts she faces, her living situation is going to be far dicier now that her new substitute teacher is the first episode’s cat killer.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

If there is anything positive to take from Miko’s struggles in this episode, it’s that the more daunting ghosts she’s faced ended up forcing her to re-think how she approaches ghosts. While the horniness of the camera angles has consistently been a detriment to this anime, the fearsome and dread-inducing scenarios Miko has to endure take a high level of tolerance to be able to face bravely.

The axman, in particular, is the freakiest because, regardless of if you know the ax won’t go through you, the possibility that it might racks through her mind as they start to make their way towards her. It’s especially freaky considering that Miko can see ghosts and if ghosts are real enough in her eyes, who’s to say they couldn’t physically manifest the edge of their blade with enough malice.

INNOCENCE AND MALEVOLENCE

But one turn of events that make her question her approach towards ghosts is through the darkest moment of the episode. Though this episode helped commemorate Miko’s father and the tough dude’s wife, it was very heavy for Miko to see the ghost of her teacher’s miscarried child floating around her pregnant belly.

It was also a sobering moment that caused Miko to confront exactly how she handles ghost encounters up to this point. Where seeing his ghost just wanting to comfort his mom and her pregnant belly made her think that maybe she should try to branch out and interact with the ghouls around her. Although it wasn’t made out to be a huge deal, it was nice for Miko to have an easier time around the vending machine ghoul when she orders a warm azuki bean drink.

This comfort is short-lived though when she finds out the new identity of her substitute teacher. It’s hard to imagine the man from the first episode who killed cats being the kind of dude with the background or care necessary to be a teacher, but given that only Miko can see his deadly aura, he’ll likely have an easy time tricking people into thinking he doesn’t murder cats. The axman might’ve been evocative at capturing the high anxiety situation of expecting the worst from a tense situation, but something tells me that this substitute teacher has different ideas in mind knowing how he felt about Miko denying him of his latest cat to kill.

  1. I’ve said it each time someone in a review said something against fanservice in this show and I will say it again,

Horror and FS have a long way of appearing together, and so does anime,
While some animes with a strong western influence or plot driven ones may feel off having these, it also feel like any other causal anime won’t feel the same without having it even as a side joke,

For Mieruko if anything the FS just added to make that slim sandwich a bit more jammed and tastier as the anime without it was just some dull horror slice of life where the MC just beat around the bush while doing absolutely nothing to improved or solve her current situation, it’s like an horror film where the second stage where the main cast who now realizing there’s a monster that is after them, suppsed to start and looking for clue as to why, how things work, and how to defeate or befriend the monster, yet it never happens,
And for the record Idk ANY horror film that didn’t moved past the first stage, and changing the formula in this case don’t feel creative one bit imo but rather just dumb,

So let us at least have FS to keep us there till the show will decide if it even want to move on or just ended up with an meaningless open ending that feel like ep 1 never ended and stop deny the reason humanity is still alive xD

      1. Oh of course, but your missing the point. Miko is ignoring her problem thinking that it will work itself out. But it’s only when she seeks knowledge will she be enlightened, all the FS is fill in for plot holes and plot armor. Try not to pay too much attention to the eye candy.

          1. Don’t worry about RenaSayers, dude. This is the person who acts like he’s the only person in the room who’s right about stuff and talks down to the characters in a show like he knows better.

  2. The reveal with the cat killer teacher was a pure “dun dun duuuuuuun” moment. With only 4 episodes left, I do hope they don’t rush the plot with the fox spirits and the teacher.
