Yet another episode of wholesome Komi moments, romantic subtleties, and even new friends being made, we are given the whole package this week as our main characters continue to find themselves in the wackiest of situations with the simpiest of simps in an attempt to overcome that damned communication disorder. While there’s usually not a major theme in your typical Komi-san episode, this one largely centered around the school’s cultural festival and all the shenanigans that come along with that. From setting up decorations to shopping for supplies and distributing flyers, there was much work to be done before the golden moment of Komi in a maid outfit would bless the viewers (and the simps) with all its kawaii glory.

Komi’s simps are her greatest obstacles

It’s clear that Komi is nothing less than a goddess to the vast majority of the students at this so-called high school, but there’s really only a select few students (including Tadano and Najimi of course) who are actually good support networks for her to make progress with developing social skills. I mean, when you are practically being worshipped as a deity by your classmates, it can be quite hard to make any meaningful connections. Luckily, Komi is still able to navigate through the nonsense and find awesome friends in people like Nene Onemine (Ruriko Aoki) and Otori Kaede (Yurika Moriyama). It’s been a while but it’s safe to say Komi’s finally added a new actual friend to her list (and not another simp). In fact, there seems to be a common trend in the world of Komi-san, basically, if you aren’t a simp for Komi then chances are you are eligible and likely to become her friend.

Still a long way to go…

While we’ve seen gradual progress with Komi’s growth in social confidence throughout the series, the harsh reality is she is a long way off where she wants to be. You know this to be true when the poor girl ended up having a meal at a restaurant against her will while distributing flyers to local businesses. There’s no doubt the improvements are certainly coming along and it was nice to see Komi speak actual words to friends other than Tadano, letting out a quiet but clear “hai” to her new friends. She also has quite a knack for bringing joy to little children with her quirky antics, which I feel is a sign of superior communication through action rather than words (like father like daughter I’d say). Furthermore, Komi’s been making some progress with her attempts at communicating to strangers, as we see from her attempted maid-cafe work with a customer, though the words still won’t come out clearly enough to warrant any significant achievement.

The ship continues

There’s no doubt that Komi comes from a family of utter beauty and gifts in charisma. Her mother and brother are worshipped just as much as she is and we can see how normal it is for members of her family to have a cult-following of simps at their beck and call. For this reason, it may suit Komi to be with someone as average as Tadano to bring her back down to earth and let her live the normal life that she desires. The whole point of Komi wanting to overcome her communication disorder is to have meaningful friendships that she can cherish, rather than the constant worshipping of simps that ultimately would make her (or anyone for that matter) feel that they just aren’t human. Komi’s shown plenty of hints at having a possible love interest (or at the very least a small crush) on Tadano, and this week’s hint was the cute blush that came out upon seeing Tadano’s maid outfit. Of course, this could be a result of being humorously entertained, but the Komi x Tadano shippers will surely say otherwise!

  1. As a manga reader, I was a bit bored at first with the anime adaptation because I knew what to expect. However, as I have watched each new episode, my interest and love of the source material has been renewed! “Koko” is so precious and I am reminded why she, along with Tadano, are some of very characters.

Since we are getting a 2nd season, I hope we see Manbagi Rumiko! She is my other favorite character of the series and I enjoyed seeing her friendship with Komi grow.
