「霧中の遺跡」 (Muchuu no Iseki)
“Ruins in the Fog”

Well that didn’t long for the mystery to kick in now did it? After a fairly mild introduction to this season over the past few weeks, Tate no Yuusha finally decided to show a few of the cards it’s been hiding in preparation for the shenanigans to come. After all, you don’t get more exhilarating than bringing back Glass.

After near effortlessly cutting off the Spirit Tortoise’s head previously, lo and behold the thing still being alive and ready to revive. In a way it does make some sense: this slow walking reptile of doom has been played up as the end all be all, it’s brought together the usual array of forces ready to die sacrifice for Naofumi to do his thing, and there’s no way in hell it’s going to fade away that quickly right at the start of the season. Thus we get the usual hidden weak point and the need for the heroes to delve down further into the beast to finally end it and all the associated fun of Death Star jokes or added pop culture references. Also character development, because say what you will about Rishia largely being a hanger on, but she’s certainly gearing up to get some redemption in the near future.

As for how that redemption unfolds, need look no further than the surprise return of L’Arc and Glass. Anyone who remembers last season should know this was going to happen at some point in this story, but even I have to admit, didn’t see it coming this quickly, and with something not arguably tied directly to the Waves to boot. L’Arc and Glass after all come from another world entirely, why would they be actively aware of what’s been indicated to be a creature unique to this one? It does at least answer who might be behind the latest rampage, because if this trio has reappeared best bet it’s to help their world overcome the Waves in a manner that won’t see Naofumi defeat them again. Or you know, someone else related to them because I doubt anyone missed the implication of that faded Japanese text or who it was specifically talking about.

We’re well-set to get the answers to all this and more, it’s just a question of how impactful the results will be.

  1. We might have some surprising answers, because it seems 7th wave will ALWAYS break seal on the DoomTurtle, and the purpose of the Turtle might be different to stated so far – yet. As for the suddenly appearing Glass and co. they might not be opposition Shield Hero and co. have to beat this time, in fact they might end up on same side? I feel another power is at work here…
