「 紅い瞳のロンリーマスター」 (Akai Hitomi no Ronrii Masutaa)
“The Crimson-Eyed Lonely Master”
Although still ostensibly a comedy, hard denying that Konosuba’s explosion detour is doing a fine job thus far of being more than laugh your sides off. Whether fully intended or not (and there’s some room for debate on that), we’re truly getting the full meal deal of Megumin-isms and sly tsundere attitudes thoroughly mixed in with larping galore. Say what you will about comedy and subjectivity, but boring this certainly ain’t.
As brought up last week, one of things I think this series does exceptionally well is highlight the more personal side of Megumin. While that chaotic love of explosions and living up to Crimson Demon heritage colours all, there’s also things like standing up for Yunyun that go above and beyond in reinforcing the depth of the girl at work. Megumin’s handling of the peer pressure Yunyun’s “friends” exerted was case in point, where she did it because she actually likes the girl and doesn’t believe in taking advantage of her or treating her badly. Well, at least to the extent of having others do so – lunch is fair game because no good deed happens on an empty stomach. The entire episode was a simple setup, but it emphatically shows how for all the teasing and roughhousing Megumin has a heart of gold and a caring personality and won’t stand for anyone breaking with those morals, something the original Konosuba barely touched on. Hell, how many times did it come up just how smart this demonic washing board actually is?
Another interesting facet too is the immediate conflict of this show in the oft mentioned dark god and its release from captivity. The responsible party at this stage should be readily apparent: Megumin, through simply being Megumin, tampered with the seal and started it towards breaking when she was younger. We may not know exactly how yet, but that explanation is coming and invites some serious fun once Megumin herself puts two and two together. After all, the Crimson Demons are larpers at heart, and Megumin isn’t one to pass off the opportunity to twist and obfuscate a situation into something more humorous (and beneficial to her pride and guilt) – and doubly so when Komekko is caught up in the mess.
It might be easy to guess how this latest bought of trouble will end, but rest assured there’ll be a surprise or two before all is said and done. Just a matter of how explosive the outcome gets.
