「女子寮の魔女!」 (Jyoshi Rou no Majyo!)
“The Witch of the Girl’s Dorm”

While I would love to see a bit more action, I can appreciate just how well Soul Eater NOT is handling its position as a side story that’s focused on the majority of the student body at the DWMA. That said, I wouldn’t mind if we got to see Meme kick some ass with Tsugumi in halberd mode.

Friendships and Misunderstandings

After this week’s episode, how can you not love Anya? The princess tsundere who left her life of lavish riches in order to discover a new way of life, she’s the embodiment of acceptance and change I wish all rich kids would adopt. At the same time she can hold her own in a street fight all the while understanding that when things start looking bad, you do whatever you have to do to stay alive. Plus she’s learning things at the speed of light (like shushing others), all of which makes her so well rounded compared to a lot of other ojou-sama types.

Which is why its really starting to hurt me when I watch her get so frustrated when she sees Meme getting a lot closer to Tsugumi than she is. While I wouldn’t say she’s inept at maintaining a relationship, it’s pretty clear she has a bad case of the deredere when it comes to getting close with others — something that I think Tsugumi and Meme can totally see and try their best to work around. So while I don’t fault them for letting their cutesy side flow free, I think they could probably try to nudge Anya a bit harder to escape that shell of hers.

But it’s not like any misunderstandings last too long — especially when you have the genius idea to do awesome things like this just for your friends.

Not such a bad person

Just like every other character before her, I’m glad to see that Kim isn’t the cold-hearted witch she was introduced at. While I could live without her constantly ending every single one of her sentences with “if you pay me”, I’m really curious about what happened in the past to have her have a stark change in her appearance and personality. While the easy answer would be that she might have financial issues, the dream she had with her previous personality attacking her makes me think it stems a lot further than just money problems.

Looking Ahead

With a villain lurking in the shadows, it seems that we finally have the final piece that’s necessary for having a successful story. While we have no idea who they are or what they want, it looks like they’re only targeting DWMA students. Either ways, I’m really hoping that this opens up the possibilities of getting some more awesome fighting scenes.

Random Thoughts

  • I can’t remember if we saw these two in the original Death Eater, but its pretty cool to know that students that were previously part of the EAT class are hiding undercover.
  • Tsugumi totally has the hots for the owner of Deathbucks. If I were her, I totally would.
  • Also, I’m glad that Tsugumi didn’t just become a master at transforming
    overnight.

  1. Best of the three episodes for sure but still lacks that Soul Eater feeling in some parts side story or not. Though I was pleasently surprised by the content of the episode.

    1. the “feeling” was likely produced when we see the “funny antics,” such as the “Shinigami Chop!” I would like to see Shinigami-sama soon, after all Tsugumi is supposed to eat souls in order to become one of Shinigami-sama’s weapons.

Though other people complain that the “feeling” is missing because of the art change. But I find it rather pleasant. If we compare kim diehl’s original to the new design, we now can say “Don’t give up, do your best Ox Ford!”

      1. Tsugumi is in the NOT class. Only the EAT Weapons have any interest in becoming Deathscythes. I doubt Tsugumi will ever consume souls. She’s just there to learn to control her powers so she isn’t dangerous: she doesn’t have any interest in actually fighting anyone.

      2. Oh right, true. But maybe motives can change. When you put a character in an “unique” environment then they tend to get easily influenced; next thing you know is that maybe our “No Edge” will get to eat a soul.

      3. Eh, it’s not just the humor. But NOT! so far is some real slice-of-life average that isn’t nearly as over-the-top as the original anime.

Just compare their first episodes which each other. They were all packed with lots of energy and entertaining action and some nice humor. NOT! is SO FAR to me an average slice-of-life that’s being bogged down with the Soul Eater name.

Which is why I found this episode to be pleasant. Some parts felt like the Soul Eater I know and love.

Soul Eater not Death Eater… x3

    And nope.
They are coming later in the manga.

Akane and Clay appear in the Soul Eater manga near the end as it heads into the final battle, but that’s well after the point where the anime diverged from it.

Like any good character there are a number of aspects to Kim’s personality. The dream goes deeper than I want to try talking about here. But for her behavior… suffice it to say that Kim has secrets that she is very afraid of letting anyone discover. What she did to help Anya there at the end is actually a hint towards the biggest secret she’s keeping.

      1. I could be wrong, but as far as I remember, this only happened in the manga and not in the anime.
So people who only watched the anime were probably surprised/confused by that scene.

  4. YES! My faith in parents is restored! I knew no one would ever actually name their kid Eternal Feather! Seriously though, that’s one crazy stage name to be stuck with for a whole two years >.< And then she charged for it?! That's making it pretty obvious Kim's just trying to push people away.

I know Tsugumi is supposed to be the "main" main character, but if this show switched to all Anya all the time, I really wouldn't complain. That little princess is just too precious!!

  5. So at least it has A BIT of action, and when it’s on-screen, it almost feels like the original SOUL EATER anime. The music helps (is this is the same composer?). The animation is still not as fluid though.

They missed a golden opportunity of including Excalibur on that band-aid.

  6. I’m not sure if it was the translators just trying to match her personality. But I found it hilarious when Meme said something like “I’ve done an goofed and bought myself a pumpkin!”

      1. Judging from that preview picture you’ll probably find out in the conversation next episode. It’s not like it spoils anything to identify an article of clothing for you, but I’ll throw it in spoiler tags anyway just so no one can object.

  7. As shown here Anya, Meme and Tsugumi are not exactly fighters. They damsels in distress that has to be rescued by two bishi upperclassmen that are.

While the Yuri is strong here there is a posibility for a boy-girl romance like Ox for Kim. If only Tsugumi, Anya and Meme will only stop to look around other than each other.

    1. I think it’s inevitable that they will have to confront an enemy eventually. The point isn’t that they’re always going to be damsels in distress, but rather that they can’t be expected to fight effectively when they have just enrolled in the school. As time goes on they will gain some ability and improve their teamwork as well, even if they might not fight the “big bad” so to say they’ll still play a part. At least, that’s what I think.

As for the romance part, I would prefer it not to go too far since a serious relationship would change the feel of the series somewhat.
