Reader’s Choice – Best Anime 2013 Poll

The end of the year is here and it’s time for the Eighth Annual Reader’s Choice poll! Do you have a favorite series you’d like to see win? Are you just curious to see what everyone else enjoyed this year? Either way, the microphone’s in your hands now. Make your vote count.

As per the usual, there will be two polls for you to vote on this year – one for regularly broadcast TV series, and another for OVA/movies. We’re asking you for your top 5 picks in each poll, which should stop the results from being heavily skewed towards the mega-popular shows. This year we have an astounding 160~ TV series (shorts are included this year) and 120~ OVA/movies/specials for you to choose from, so make sure you look over the entire list before deciding. Keep in mind that like all entertainment, anime is subjective. There is no one size fits all here. Please respect the opinions of others, even if you may disagree vehemently with them.

More after the jump.

Note: The polls will close at midnight PST on Thursday, January 2nd. This means the morning of the 3rd, or 8:00 AM GMT on the 3rd. Results will be posted in the Best of Anime 2013 post, which will be written by myself and Stilts (the two active writers who have watched the most anime this year).

Reader’s Choice – Best Anime 2012 Poll

It’s that time of year again – welcome, one and all, to the Seventh Annual Reader’s Choice poll! Do you have a favorite series you’d like to see win? Or perhaps you’re just curious what everyone else enjoyed this year? Well either way, this is the time to cast your vote and make your voices heard!

As has become our habit, there will be two polls for you to vote on this year – one for regularly broadcast TV series, and another for OVA/movies. We’re asking you for your top 5 picks in each poll, which should stop the results from being heavily skewed towards the mega-popular shows. This year we have an astounding 132 TV series and 71 OVA/movies for you to choose from, so make sure you look over the entire list before deciding. Also, please respect other people’s choices in the comments, and keep in mind that entertainment is subjective. People like what they like, so even if you might think they have terrible taste (ooo, ooo, ooo, that’s me!!), please try to respect their opinions.

More after the jump.

Note: The polls will close on Tuesday, January 1st at 8:00 AM GMT. Results will be posted in the Best of Anime 2012 post, which will be written by the three active writers who have watched the most anime this year.

Update: Polls closed. Thank you for taking the time to vote!

Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2011 Poll

With the new year rapidly approaching, it’s time to look back on our favorites of 2011. This is the Sixth Annual Reader’s Choice poll, where it’s your turn to voice your opinion and have it heard!

Continuing the trend from two years ago, there are two polls for your to vote on — one for regularly broadcast TV series and another for OVA/movies. We’re asking for your top 5 picks in both polls to get a better spread of results that aren’t heavily skewed in favor of any unanimously popular shows. This year, you have 99 TV series and 57 OVA/movies to choose from, so have a careful look over the lists before deciding. Also, please respect other people’s choices in the comments and keep in mind that this is purely subjective. People like what they like.

Note: The polls don’t have a fixed close date just yet, but it will be sometime next week when the Winter 2012 season starts.

Update: Polls closed. Thank you for taking the time to vote! Results will be posted soon in the upcoming Best of Anime 2011 post.

Poll: Spring 2011 Anime Season

After allocating whatever free time I had in the past couple of months, I managed to get the season preview out on the week I was hoping, meaning there should be ample time to vote on the upcoming spring shows. Please keep in mind that most shows will likely be pushed out a week due to the natural disaster that struck Japan, so there’s anywhere from one and a half to two and a half weeks before the season starts. Once again, you can refer to the Spring 2011 Preview for any dates that have changed. The currently announced changes are marked in red and more are likely to come.

I realize it’s going to be difficult to pick 5 shows from the 43 that will be airing, but keep in mind that this poll is only intended to get an idea for what readers are looking forward to. Just vote for the five shows that you’re looking forward to the most, even if you plan to watch many more than that. Hopefully the season preview has given you a better idea as to what each title is about and if there are any that interest you. I’ve already categorized all the shows according to my expectations, so now I turn things over to you to share your thoughts. You never know, some fan sub groups just might be listening.

Note: The same poll will also be available on the sidebar. It is tentatively set to close on April 1st at 7:00 AM GMT, coinciding with the start of the new season. If the season start date gets pushed out, so will the poll.

Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2010 Poll

It’s… TIME! Time to look back at 2010 that is, so I’d like to present the Fifth Annual Reader’s Choice Poll.

Similar to last year, there are two polls for you to vote on — one for regularly broadcast series and another for OVA/movies. The subtle change is the number of votes has increased from three to five for series and one to three for OVA/movies to further diversify results so they aren’t heavily skewed. With 98 series and 71 OVA/movies to choose from, we’re now asking for your top five and top three of 2010 respectively.

The criteria for a regular broadcast anime to be included is that it had to have been a TV series that finished airing in 2010. The general idea here is that you can’t really judge a series until it’s over, so shows such as STAR DRIVER and To Aru Majutsu no Index II will appear in next year’s poll. For OVA/movies, it has to have been released on DVD/BD in 2010 to qualify, ensuring that viewers outside of Japan have had a chance to watch it. This mostly pertains to theatrical offerings. I’ve loosened the requirement on being complete though, which is why you see Gundam Unicorn episodes one/two and Break Blade movies one/two included in the list as single entries.

As far as I’m aware, the anime series list is complete. The OVA/movie is purposely less so since there are a lot of really niche OVAs that aren’t really worth considering. However, if you feel there’s something the deserves consideration, please send me an e-mail and I’ll add it. Otherwise, you are welcome to vote for it in the Others option. Let the voting begin!

Note: The polls will close on Sunday, January 2nd at 8:00 AM GMT. Results will be posted in the upcoming Best of Anime 2010 post.

The Reader’s Choice Polls are after the jump.

Polls are now closed. Thank you for taking the time to vote.

Poll: Winter 2011 Anime Season

Time is counting down to the new year and I still have the year-end Reader’s Choice poll to put up soon, so here’s the seasonal one first. I’ve decided to stick with the five-vote maximum used this past fall, since it allows for a more diverse range of results. While some people may not think so, I actually find this upcoming season rather interesting, offering twenty-two new titles with a fair bit of variety. At the moment, I’m not even sure what to make of some despite their potential, whereas others I’m eagerly looking forward to because I have a good idea what I’m in store for. What that translates to is a good season to start, with the possibility of turning out to even better if one or two hidden gems are discovered. Anyway, if you haven’t already, please refer to the Winter 2011 Preview for detailed information on each of the shows listed. As always, comments are welcome if there’s anything you want to add about a particular show or the winter season in general. Let the anticipation begin!

Note: The same poll will also be available on the sidebar. It will automatically close on January 3rd at 4:00 PM GMT to coincide with the start of the new season.

Poll: Fall 2010 Anime Season

Now that you have a better idea of the new shows around the corner and my personal outlook on each of them, here’s your opportunity to voice your opinion and see what others are looking forward to. If you haven’t already, please refer to the Fall 2010 Preview for detailed information on each of the shows listed. I’ve also added several more promotional videos to the various entries, so they’re worth checking out to get a better impression of what they’re like. Due to the vast number of shows (27), I’ve increased the choices from three to five this time around, so that there’s more room for some lesser anticipated shows to be highlighted. As always, comments are welcome if there’s anything you want to add about a particular show or the fall season in general. Let your voice be heard!

Note: The same poll will also be available on the sidebar. It will automatically close on October 1st at 2:00 AM to coincide with the start of the season.

Poll: Summer 2010 Anime Season

In the past, only the Reader’s Choice poll for the year-end Best of Anime post got an real sort of attention, but I’m leaning towards having something similar every season to see what our readers are looking forward. In any case, I hope the Summer 2010 Preview was helpful in sifting through all the new shows and finding the ones that interest you. I already have a really good idea of what I plan to watch (and of those which ones to blog), but here’s your chance to voice your picks and compare them with others. As always, comments are welcome if there’s anything you want to add about a particular show or the summer season in general.

Note: The same poll will also be available on the sidebar.

Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2009 Poll

It’s time for the Fourth Annual Reader’s Choice Poll!

This year, we’re changing the poll in a few key ways:

  • There are now two polls. One poll is for all regularly broadcast series and the other is for OVAs, ONAs, and movies.
  • You now get three votes for the regularly broadcast series poll and one vote for the OVA/ONA/movie poll. This lets you choose your top three for the year instead of just top one, which in past years has skewed the poll towards certain shows.
  • You can write-in your favorite show or OVA/ONA/movie if it’s not on the list. However, if you choose to write-in a title that doesn’t qualify (see below), then that’s basically wasting a vote.
  • The criteria for a series being included on the regularly broadcast series list is that it had to have been a complete TV series that ended in 2009. The general idea here is that you can’t really judge a series until it’s over, and that means that fans of shows like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will have to wait until next year’s poll. The criteria for a series being included on the OVA/ONA/movie list is just that it has to have been released in 2009 on DVD or online. This means that Summer Wars does not qualify this year. Still, if there’s anything you think that deserves to be put as an option on either list that isn’t already there, then feel free to email me, and I’ll add it.

These polls will close on Friday, January 1st, 2010 at approximately 08:00 AM GMT.
I’ve extended voting 24 hours. These polls will now close on Saturday, January 2nd 2010 at approximately 08:00 AM GMT.

The poll is now closed. The results will be announced soon!

    Reader’s Choice – Favorite Anime 2008 Poll

It’s time for the Third Annual Reader’s Choice Poll!

Every year there are so many good choices, and I’m still in the process of choosing my own favorites (GEASS, Macross Frontier, and true tears are at the top of my list), but below, you can vote for your Favorite Anime of 2008 from a list of every single series that’s ended this past year.

The criteria for a series being included on this list is that it had to have been a complete TV series that ended in 2008 or will be ending very soon. The general idea here is that you can’t really judge a series until it’s over, and that means that fans of shows like Toradora! will have to wait until next year’s poll. I also wasn’t able to include any OVAs because there were just too many of them, though I’ve added Detroit Metal City and Kara no Kyoukai to the list by special request. In addition, I’ve combined series that were split into two parts into one listing (i.e. Vampire Knight and Vampire Knight Guilty). Still, if there’s anything you think I omitted that fits into the above criteria, feel free to email me, and I’ll add it to the list.

Choose your favorite, tell your friends to come vote, and the winner will get included in a post later this week!

This poll will close Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 at 11:59 PM EST.

Edit: There were some problems with the polling software, so voting got frozen for a few hours. Please try voting again if you weren’t able to earlier.

The poll has been closed early. Please see this post.
