Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu – 05

「圧倒的暴力」 (Attouteki Bouryoku)
“Overwhelming Violence”

If there’s ever been an episode title more fitting than this one, I can’t think of it. Overwhelming violence indeed. This was the Worf Effect (trope!) writ large, only instead of the new bad guy punching out Worf (or Wolverine), Galand took down three members of the Sins, plus Slader for good measure. There’s not much to say, because it had one goal—to solidify the Ten Commandments as terrifyingly powerful—and it did that. I can certainly say that the cliffhanger is a total bastard, though. This is one of those times I really wish I wasn’t watching this weekly, because I want to know how they got out of this! I mean, they can’t die, right? They’re three of the most main of main characters. It has to be some kind of trick, right? Maybe a Gowther illusion? Right?

Right?

If the battle against Galand sets up the Ten Commandments as a physical threat to our heroes, the conversation between the rest of the Commandments sets them up as existential threats to every living thing in Britannia—and especially humans, because they seem to enjoy killing them the most. Having the magic be trapped up in living things serves to explain why everything is different than it was in the past, but it also gives an excuse for the mook battles that will keep characters like Gilthunder in the action, ’cause they’re clearly not up to facing the Commandments themselves. I’m definitely down for this Hendrickson redemption arc, even if I’d rather they explain that dang cliffhanger with the rest of the Sins first. Gah!

But man, as broken as the Sins are—Ban can insta-heal with his blood, Merlin can create invulnerable shields, Meliodas can power up precipitously—they’re nothing next to even one of the Commandments. I hope there’s a good reason why they’ll be able to challenge the Commandments soon, because the gap between them is crazy wide right now. Where’s that Hyperbolic Time Chamber when you need it?

Random thoughts:

  • Good thing Merlin summoned Diane’s clothes, otherwise this was going to become a different anime. Though I like that Diane didn’t give a damn if she was streaking. She kept running. Saving her friend is more important. Rock on!

This show lacks spark of the first season, main villains remind me of Soul Eater with their blank stare dead fish eyes, even the demons they send to cities are like Soul Eater, where’s Maka when you need her.

They’re obviously not dead. Gowther’s appearance there at the end should make pretty clear where they’re going with this.
