「破滅の明日」 (Hametsu no Ashita)
“A Doomed Tomorrow”

This certainly was an interesting episode, turns out Kasane is not actually all that bad. Instead sent back in time by an older Yuito full of regrets in a long-forgotten and destroyed world. The black hole that Kasane and Yuito accidentally opened, is the cause of all the time-traveling shenanigans, and the only way to close the quasi black hole is to kill Yuito, because every time he uses his powers the black hole opens more and more until it’s so big is bound to destroy everything in its path. The black hole is so large at this point (2070) it causes earthquakes and is devouring everything in its path. Meanwhile, the OSF continues with their experimentation on humans and makes them other’s, for what purpose, is still unclear.

When Kasane gets back to 2020 she encounters Yuito’s dad, who is on the brink of death, she is about to call the medical team but the man has little time left, and so she does nothing. Instead, when the younger version of Yuito appears, she is expeditious, not giving a second thought at wanting to kill Yuito, because he’s the root of the problem or so it seems.

So the two divergent stories come together to form one of two endings, or so I’m gathering. Aren’t Kasane and Yuito the protagonists of the game? Each of them has its own route. I have yet to play the videogame but this is what I’m gathering from reading the comments of people who have actually played the game.

At this point, the end of both routes should be clear to anyone who has played any type of divergent story media. Scarlet Nexus doesn’t really try to go outside the box or try anything new, instead, it has a straightforward story that doesn’t really do anything outstanding with itself. I’m still unsure if this anime was even necessary, but I digress.

There is one key moment in the opening that actually spoils today’s specific plot point. It seems that future Yuito was very adamant about ‘the only way to stop all of this is to kill his younger self.’ And in the process allows others to devour him, in a sense killing himself because he sees no longer a purpose to continue living. However I do wish they would have explained how exactly he lost his sight, or maybe that’s something that will happen later on, and they’re saving it for a future reveal. Nonetheless, tons of info dump this episode, so much so that my brain went into overdrive and now I’m unable to recall most of it. Turns out, the red strings are actually time traveling devices that only people with strong enough space bending psionics are able to control, Kasane and Yuito have such power, but Kasane is stronger and that’s why she was taken away by the red strings.

Furthermore, Yuito was called to be a hero by his brother, and Kasane becomes a runaway as part of Karen’s team, or at least that’s my understanding of the whole flash bomb scene. Plus there is the fact that Karen’s Brain Eater stole Kasane’s psionic. So at least for a couple of upcoming episodes Kasane and Yuito won’t be fighting on the same team anymore. One thing I do have to say for sure about Scarlet Nexus is it does know how to create drama. This tension that lies between the two main protagonists now antagonists to each other is a great plot device to create stress between the two. Adding on top of that Yuito feels gloomy because of the death of his dad, and has an excuse to go after Kasane, in a blind rage, and execute her in cold blood if he wants to. And Kasane has the same excuse, turn her back on the OSF, and kill Yuito in cold blood because of the whole time-traveling thing. It’s interesting, and I hope they do it in a way that’s engaging in the final outcome.

However, the case, thanks for reading this blog post, remember codes after the preview, and don’t forget to come back next week for another episode of Scarlet Nexus!
