The latest Code Geass picks up where we left off as Roze’s efforts to rescue Sakura with the help of Seven Shining Stars. But little do they know that there are reinforcements who are more than capable of turning the tides.

PRISON BREAK

So far, everything’s been pretty safe. The past two episodes make a nice argument for a show like Code Geass coming back into the fold. With how theatrical and expressive the tone of the anime is, it’s addictive to watch a mech opera that leans on its campy tone. It’s hard not to laugh when the antagonistic Arnold Renck starts grabbing his face and cackling at the prospect of facing off against Ash Phoenix, when Catherine Sabathra is shooting selfies before being sent out to recapture Sakura, or when Yoko’s immediate reaction towards Haruka’s return is to smash her face into her chest.

I also can’t help but appreciate how this installment of Code Geass doesn’t shy away with hitting you with the nuttiest twists. This episode’s ending took me out because it’s so insane that Sakuya’s main revenge plot is brainwashing her father’s killer into pretending she’s his brother. It’s so elaborate and wild, but definitely on par with the series’

This next part is speculation, but I’m curious if Sakuya made up Roze as a fake person or if Roze was once a real person. Because if I wanted to be evil as a writer, I’d have Sakuya kill off a real Roze who was related to Ash, and have her assume his identity to get close to him. That way, Sakuya’s Geass would not only have Ash believe that she’s the real Roze, but also force Ash to believe that his brother was alive and well.

At the same time, it does feel like I’m taking Refrain when I watch this season. Where instead of being impressed with the newer changes, I appreciate the show because it reminds me of the past. It comes off like a legacy sequel that aims more to showcase what made the original anime so special. This can be nice at times, though it’d be neat to see how the show manages to differentiate Roze from Lelouch since it feels like they made them similar to help ease newer viewers into the world of Code Geass.

  1. I’m guessing the writers intend that Roze is just Sakuya’s make up name to resemble the name of leader of the black knight. Flip ze-Ro(ゼロ) around and you’ve got Ro-ze(ロゼ).

The named Britannian dude Ash killed was surprised to hear that Ash has a brother. I think that’s another indication that Roze is a complete fabrication.
