「仕組まれた罠」 (Asakusa Kaisen Zenya)
“Eve of Hostilities in Asakusa”
Because of a pretty hectic week and weekend, this review of Enen no Shouboutai will be a little shorter than usual!
General Impressions
Because of special programming Enen no Shouboutai was on a three-week hiatus and was sorely missed. The current season is interesting but nothing has captivated me (yet) as much as Enen no Shouboutai and Vinland. I welcome back the familiarity with open arms.
Moving onto the episode itself, am I the only one who might think Beni-chan is a little overpowered?
This episode had three distinct roles to play. To some extent, it was designed to showcase more of Benimaru’s abilities, however, the action scene wasn’t at the core of the episode. At the core was, first and foremost, Koro and Benimaru’s relationship. Then, it was about the Fire Force 8 division’s testament to loyalty, friendship, and community. And third, it was to explore the roles of the White Hoods, those working with the Evangelist, who can somehow take on other people’s appearance? Is this an ability we have yet to uncover or just a cheap Halloween trick? Even I was duped!
It was a pretty straightforward episode. The plot is moving ahead and the ‘rebuilding’ story has kindly reintroduced characters we haven’t seen in a while, reminding us one by one of their abilities, and the roles they play. That said, I’m still waiting for Tamaki to play a bigger role than getting pummeled and being stripped to her skivvies.
Captain Obi wins ‘character of the episode’ award if you ask me. He was fierce, just, assertive, and displayed a lot of resolve and strength against Benimaru. He never faltered even knowing he was no match (in pyrokinetic ability) to his counterpart. As Captain, he knows he has to take responsibility for the wellbeing of his team, just the kind of person anyone would want leading them. After this episode, he’s definitely made up for not being there at the 5th’s headquarters to help his team when they went up against them.
I’m curious to see what Koro’s ability is and how that battle contributed to his degenerative state. This ‘new’ disease affecting third-generation pyrokinetic users is concerning. Does this mean Shinra and others are at risk of developing the condition if they overuse their abilities? That’d be a horrible way to go…
I’m liking what’s transpired so far. Clearly the Illuminaughty are sinister people.
I almost had to double-check to make sure I was watching the last episode and not Episode 11 because so many things in the first five minutes are similar.
“If you don’t want to fight me, prove it by fighting me.” This guy must be Emiya Shirou’s fan from the First Fate Stay/Night Series.
“That said, I’m still waiting for Tamaki to play a bigger role than getting pummeled and being stripped to her skivvies.”
Sadly, that is 90% of her role in the story. Even the characters themselves acknowledge that is her role.
