「約束の場所」 (Yakusoku no Basho)
“Where the Promise Was Made”

Episode 12 of Gleipnir provides further context to how Shuichi ended up getting powers and, as it turns out, one of the catalysts for everyone becoming grimdark monsters is Kaito’s lack of critical thinking skills.

Honoka might have come up with the idea to have Uchuujin grant wishes, but that backfired quickly when she decided to use Uchuujin to grant her friend Aiko’s dying wish to take her place. Her unfortunate suicide caused Honoka to use one of her wishes to transform herself into her late friend, but the optics of this decision didn’t pan out too well because if people put their thinking caps on, then there wouldn’t be a conflict, and that wouldn’t be any fun, right?

Kaito really thought he had a good idea going when he killed Honoka in a crime of passion as he immediately jumped to the conclusion that she murdered Aiko to live in the lap of luxury. To be fair, he was so far out-of-the-loop that he didn’t even know that Aiko had been bullied to the point of ending her life. At the same time, murdering your friend in a blind rage should not be the first solution you come up with if you have no idea why they took another friend’s identity.

It explains why Kaito decided to have his body conjoined with Honoka’s spirit and why Elena and Naoto are now trying to hunt him down in the forest, but for Shuichi, it doesn’t give him as much to work with by the end of the episode. At most, it lets Clair draw conclusions about how Shuichi had himself turned into a stuffed animal that was in the orphanage and allowed Chihiro another opportunity to continue snitching on everyone she knows to Elena. The next episode’s the last one so they have a lot of ground to try to cover if they want to wrap everything up in a tight enough bow to leave on a positive note.

    1. There isn’t as much manga available at the moment for a second season to be greenlit right away, so it’ll likely go with a “read the manga” route.

Darker action-packed manga often get the short end of the stick with adaptations too, so it’d be impressive if they were to give it a season 2.

      1. There’s also no rush to produce a second season because of the Covid-19 crisis. Studios have a backlog of shows to produce, what with a lot of unproduced Spring shows now becoming Summer shows and then summer shows becoming a fall shows for some studios. Its a mess. Not including shows started but unfinished because of Covid that will be completed during the Summer season, further delaying pre planned shows being released.

Then add in the widely expected second wave of Covid during Winter I don’t think anime in general will be back to normal anytime soon.

        1. Not to mention pretty much all the sequel show announcements made during the Covid-19 crisis which weren’t pre planned have all been giving 2021 release dates, some over a year from now. Some studios have also been fairly quiet during the crisis in terms of announcement because they have a full schedule of shows to produce, including delayed ones.

If anything Gleipnir is announced this year I would expect a Spring/Summer 2021 attached to it, probably late 2021 even.
