「咆哮の再会」 (Houkou no Saikai)
“Reunion of Roars”

Ahh, now things are starting to heat up – quite literally. And with unexpected developments to boot! While there may be legitimate complaints about how long Re: Zero is taking in getting to the good stuff right now, it’s hard denying that when the pieces finally fall together, the results prove impressive. After all, bringing back both Elsa and Puck implies serious fun on the horizon.

Given all the focus on Emilia and Roswaal these past few weeks, I’m sure it proved a little surprising when Ram of all people got some time in the spotlight. Major time. Although Ram still bears some of the “comedic relief” overtones born during Re: Zero’s first season, time like this really highlight how Rem isn’t the only part of the blue-red ogre duo with quiet attention to detail or impassioned desires. Ram may not show well what she’s feeling at times, but you can be sure it’ll come out when the moment requires it. Something Roswaal didn’t fully expect. Yeah, there may be some confusing or otherwise forgotten aspects concerning Roswaal’s and Ram’s relationship not well touched on here, however I think the main implications are clear: Subaru isn’t the only one fighting against Roswaal’s obsessive desires, and this side of the fight isn’t likely to go as Roswaal plans thanks to a little spiritual assistance.

As for the main attraction of rescuing the mansion all hands are finally on deck, and oh boy the results will be a blast. Besides reunions and the hilarity of Garfiel now being a confirmed squirt, the setup to finally break Beatrice free of the library has been created and Subaru is poised to pick himself up yet another magical girl. Well, at least if Emilia doesn’t suddenly decide to now take declarations of love as declarations of friendship – one never knows, have to keep those ship lovers guessing! Considering four episodes remain it’s not likely Subaru and company will easily overcome Elsa and her yet-to-be-re-revealed partner, but as Emilia is soon to wrap up the Sanctuary trials (her new mindset is unlikely to falter after coming so far) and Roswaal has been stalled in his grand plans, I don’t anticipate too many life-ending challenges in the close.

One way or another the troubles of Sanctuary are finally entering the endgame; all we can do now is wait and see how the dust finally settles.

  1. I believe Roswaal is mistaken in his belief that the world is coming to an end soon. Roswaal remarks that Emilia really has changed, but says it doesn’t matter what Emilia does because the world is headed in the wrong direction and to a point in which it will end, which shows either that Roswaal thinks this is a failed loop and that Subaru will reset it or that Roswaal is mistaken about what it means when his not-quite-Tome of Wisdom stops telling the future much like how Beatrice thought her copy of the tome no longer having new updates shows that her life was going to end. I’m more keen on Roswaal’s book no longer telling the future after a certain point implying that Ram and Puck will be successful in destroying his book.

    1. Puck had always been staying in Frederica’s crystal ever since he broke his contract with Emilia.

Remember in episode 41 when Puck drained Garfiel’s mana and reverted him out of his giant tiger form? Puck even talked and said that’s all the help he will offer to Subaru in that situation.

  2. The characters looked off model more than once, but it was, yet another, word heavy episode, so eh.
Will they even show how Roswaal and Echidna dealt with Hector?
What use does Ram have for Roswaal’s soul/life that she agreed to serve him?
    Fully restore her oni powers?
Gotta say though, the longwinded talks these past episodes cooled down my enjoyment of the show a bit. Probably worked a lot better in light novel form…

    1. boingman, if you had paid attention to episode 27, you would know that Hector was disoriented by the barrier and could not make it to the Sanctuary because that’s one of the purposes of the Sanctuary, so the threat of Hector has been taken care of. That’s why Subaru in episode 44 said he found out about the true purpose of the Sanctuary and then the flashback in episode 45 concluded with the barrier activating. It’s because keeping Hector away was the original purpose of the Sanctuary. This is also why Ryuzu Meyer said to Beatrice that you can’t defeat Hector by fighting him and that that is what the Sanctuary is for.

On Ram, I am speculating based off of what we’ve seen in Season 1 and Season 2 that Roswaal is the one keeping Ram alive. Roswaal indicated in Season 1 at the end of the first arc that Ram had used a lot of mana, so he’ll have to tend to her, which entailed touching her horn area. At the time, I thought it had a sexual purpose given Ram’s reaction to it, but after episode 40 when Ram started bleeding from her horn area when she used her demon powers to fight Garfiel, it’s clear that Ram overburdened herself by attempting to tap into those powers without her horn, so given Roswaal’s remark that she had lost a lot of mana, I now conclude that Ram cannot regain her mana naturally because of her horn being cut off, meaning that Roswaal is the one keeping Ram alive.

      1. What I meant is that they didn’t show the sanctuary actually keeping him out. We got Ryuzu sacrificing herself but I don’t remember the anime switching back to Hector after that.
Yes, he helps her with her mana, but would his life make up for her horn?

        1. Maybe it’s just me, but I think all we needed to know was that the barrier was activated, which triggered the disorienting outsiders effect,

As far as would Roswaal’s life make up for her horn, I have no idea.

    2. I don’t expect we’ll get much more on Hector for the moment, but we haven’t seen the last of him as the outcome of that fight is the reason for Roswaal’s current state. It’ll be touched on once the rest of Roswaal’s past is finally revealed.
