「無法都市」 (Muhou Toshi)
“The Lawless City”
To be honest for all this fall has anime out the wazoo there’s only a few shows I’m really looking forward to, and Eminence in Shadow just happens to be one. Sure, it’s an isekai, and oh yes it’s not really breaking boundaries or setting records, but sometimes convention is all you need. Especially when it hits all the right notes.
Given this season is a true sequel to the one which came earlier this year, don’t anticipate much of a recap (that’s why previous coverage and binge watching exist!) and indeed Eminence in Shadow doesn’t waste much time on it either. Basically the main man Kagenou Cid (Yamashita Seiichirou) was isekai’d right into fantasy land and wound up being the head of a secretive world saving organization. Except Cid thinks said organization is a veritable figment of his imagination while it – and its enemies – fully exist. Last season saw the fruits of this dissonance in action and this opener played fully into the theme, with Cid setting out to deal with yet more evil elements while being completely oblivious to the underlying truth of everything. It’s dumb, it’s crazy, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t remain hilarious. After all, the kid had the imaginative thoughtfulness to subconsciously drag along the comedic relief in the process.
Humour aside the main focus of this arc will be Lawless City and its resident sleeping vampire queen. How and where it ties back into the Cult of Diabolos – i.e. the main opponent for Cid’s Shadow Garden – remains to be seen, but suffice to say Cid’s overactive imagination will eventually eke out an answer which just so happens to be 100% accurate. The key players will be Mary the vampire hunter (basically this arc’s deadpan replacement for the now recruited Rose), the totally normal big sister Claire (whom you know full well will be giving Mary a run for her money insanity-wise), and the usual plethora of ignorant antagonists via Crimson who have no idea just what monster is about to descend upon them. Give it a week or two and we’ll know what’s up with this eclectic mix and their glorified rumble in the jungle, but right now at least there’s no denying that Eminence in Shadow’s second act is checking off all the right boxes.
Buckle up boys and girls, it’s going to be a fun season.

You don’t say. Cid’s recap of his own adventures was as short and unhelpful as it was hilarious. Not even he cares about the details of his exploits. He just lives for LARPing.
I got an even greater kick out of how he kept repeating Mary’s lines verbatim – and even to the same person. That was true dedication to the chuuni cause XD
I’m sure this will get better since I figure this episode was mainly to set the scene.
Just after Cid’s recap when I saw the Bushin Festival Scene for a moment I thought I would get to see Mundane Mann again especially as Goldy and Quinton from the same event were just introduced but alas it was a bait and switch and we got Claire instead.
I suspect it will as well, though the pacing this episode definitely raised an eyebrow. Need another episode or two to know what to expect.
Cid is probably a god at some level since everything he imagines becomes reality and everything he wants works out.
