“Let`s Make Friends”
The third episode of Migi to Dali begins their quest to search the homes of anyone they could potentially befriend. But with two people who have never made friends, they’ve got another thing coming if they’re expecting to make normal acquaintances.
PEACHFUZZ
Their first friend, Shunpei, appears to be a kind, reliable, ride-or-die kind of compatriot. At first, he seems like the kind of friend everyone would dream of having, especially as he cheered them on as they tried to walk a tightrope for new friends. Little did they know about his own personal hobbies.
One of the funniest scenes I’ve seen in a comedy anime this year has to be Dali having to keep Shunpei in his room. At first, nothing is too amiss when Dali uses his Hitori voice to sweetly ask his new friend to tell him more about him. Shunpei’s winged bike and love of flying didn’t look too far off from the aspirations of Tombo from Kiki’s Delivery Service. Shunpei mentions wanting to be a bird, and even that’s easy to understand. Who wouldn’t want to fly from place to place with freedom in mind?
Then, he rushes to his closet to show off his elaborate bird costume. The paper mache helmet, the feathery cape, and the genuine glee Shunpei has in finding someone who wants to learn more about him is absolutely devastating for Dali. The nicest, most genuine friend they made also has a deep complex about pretending to be a bird. And because Dali needs him as far away from his sister’s room while Migi raids it for clues, he has no choice but to act like Shunpei sharing this information is the most intimate, heartfelt experience he’s felt.
Meanwhile, Migi is busy dreading his deep dive of Shunpei’s sister’s room for clues with the dread of being caught in mind. It is hilarious when Migi’s tense search gets him accidentally caught in the sister’s reflexive grasp much to his pleasant surprise. The immediate cut from Migi in the sister’s embrace to Dali being held tight by Shunpei’s wings is some of the wildest TV this season.
BEST FIENDS
On the flipside, the Maruta chapter was a JoJo-esque battle of wits as Migi and Dali have to contend with their second friend being a bully. Despite Shunpei’s interests, Maruta is the very definition of downgrade as he refuses to play a game unless he wins every time.
And because Migi is the empathetic brother, he gets trapped in Maruta’s abusive cycle until Dali switches with him with the intention of winning a crucial game of Janken and beating him with a sandal. If Shunpei’s hangout was gaining a confidant by offering unconditional acceptance to an unusual dreamer, Maruta’s hangout was gaining an accomplice by intimidating a bully and making them submit.
While this checks off two houses that Migi and Dali have explored, I’m interested in seeing if the two new pals they’ve made will open any new doors for them to make even more friends. Joining the boyscouts and taking on the tightrope stunt might be enough for them to be integrated with the rest of the boys, but it’s matter of time before
