Migi to Dali – 04

Episode 04 of Migi to Dali takes the twins to school as they have to integrate with the new school-life they are thrown into. But in the process of trying to gain the attention of Eiji, a boy who may be the key to finding their mother’s killer, Migi is distracted by the power of love.

MAKING THE GRADE

The search to investigate Eiji helps to shed light on the kind of system the twins’ new school operates off of. Where an early aptitude test determines exactly what kinds of classmates you’ll share, and who you should/shouldn’t mingle with. Migi and Dali waffling their initial placement test made sure that they’d have an uphill battle to face with a combination of being locked into lower-level classes and contending with their adoption status being leaked to the student body.

The obstacles they face are interesting because it takes into consideration that Migi and Dali’s intellect are solely focused on their tactical prowess, and that they’ll have to study hard if they want to be book-smart. It adds an extra layer of suspense to the manhunt between the two parties as the twins might have a good idea where to look, but Eiji has the upper-hand by seeing their pendant and being a highly-beloved student in the gifted class.

I’m curious as to what they’ll do with Eiji considering that he looks and feels like he’d be an antagonist, especially with the immediate knowledge of where the twins’ pendant may have come from. At the same time, I could see it being a misdirect if he or his family have a stronger relationship with their mother. I’m curious about whether they’ll go all-in by linking his family for her death, or if he’ll happen to know someone who once knew her.

MYSTERY GIRL

But things aren’t all doom and gloom as the show manages to squeeze in more than enough laughs into the equation. Right out the gate, I found it funny to see Migi fuming at his mom and the maid Micchan poking fun at his underwear just when he was getting ready to declare psychological warfare on her. It reminded me of all the times when I was young and overly embarrassed at all the humiliating things that my relatives thought were hilarious like clothing choices or childhood obsessions.

The real star of this episode, however, was Sali, Dali’s femme alter ego who he disguises himself as to have an easier, quieter time studying. Little did he know that his brother Migi fell head-over-heels in love with Sali. It was hilarious to see exactly how far Dali was willing to go to lead his brother on if it meant encouraging Migi to start acing his exams. I was out of commission when Migi crushed his exams for the sole purpose of fulfilling Sali’s promise to date him if he got 100’s across the board.

I couldn’t help but feel guilty for Migi considering how being left in the dark opened him up to the devastating heartbreak of thinking that his crush was ready to leave town right when she agreed to an aquarium date and exchanged pendants. I have a bad feeling that Dali will mess up and leave Sali’s pendant or belongings out in the open for Migi to find out. But that’s just my paranoia at all of the Chekov’s guns I’ve stumbled across in other shows I’ve been watching lately where one mistake always leads to an avalanche of consequences.
