In true Re:Zero fashion once the festivities start they ain’t stopping anytime soon, and this episode was all about reinforcing that point. Abandon planning, say goodbye to structure: where we’re going is straight into chaos and best be sure there shall be plenty of it.
As far as Subaru’s Return by Death cycles are this one with Sirius is one of the more interesting for the simple reason that it’s short. Barely a few hours exist between his save point and untimely death so the condensed timeframe offers a measure of suspense in the way previous arcs did not. You can see it already with how the kid initially rushed to get ahead of crazy, only for crazy to in turn preempt the victory and yield one hell of a death scene. It’s not enough for Subaru to take the initiative, he also has to be smart about it, something he has admittedly grown accustomed to over time and a trait we’ve seen him develop over the seasons. Thinking of asking Reinhart or swallowing his pride and protective nature with Emilia after all is something the previous Subaru would never have done without being dragged through repeated deaths into it, but here we are in a new world with new requirements. Just a question of how Subaru will rise to the challenge.
Case in point of the challenge ahead comes from Sirius’ reaction to Emilia joining the fray. For the sake of spoilers I won’t mention too much, but suffice to say Sirius’ rant about her husband, Emilia’s connection with the cult, and the slyly mentioned history of Priestella should give plenty of hints for why the Sin Archbishop of Wrath is professing her love so and why she’s doing it where she is. Likewise tack on Regulus now formally introducing himself and seemingly making off with Emilia as wife pickup no. 79 and you get a good idea regarding the pieces at play and the difficulties ahead for Subaru and company. In short there’s going to be a lot struggle ahead both figuring out the specifics of Witch Cult intentions and how to combat them, and with it plenty of suffering on the part of Subaru to fend them all off.
It’ll be a slow burn getting to the real theatrics of this arc (as this week is effectively a taste), but rest assured the results shall prove explosive.
