It’s been so long since an action anime had me hooked from the first minute to the last. Not only is the art gorgeous, but the steampunk world is compelling, the violence is visceral and gripping, and as a premiere it did a better job than its spiritual predecessor.

I was prepared to get all teary eyed at the prospect of saying goodbye to this wonderful series, but thankfully there is no need. This episode was more a new beginning than a conclusive ending, and it all works out because a second season has been confirmed!

Haruchika never had the best execution, but it tackled issues that many anime would shy away from or would be ignorant enough to ignore.

You don’t come across anime like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu all that often – series that are remarkably consistent with their sublime storytelling, brilliant direction, and characters that feel like real people; people who make mistakes, who you can love one episode and hate the next because of how morally grey they are. This series is truly one of a kind.
