THE WELCOME SOIREE

It was unusual to find out that Arnold went through a Jeremiah-esque transformation into an anti-Geass weapon. Christoph seems to be the main figure in Neo Britannia who is spear-heading their involvement in Geass research, which I find neat because it comes off like the other officials don’t see much importance in his Geass research.

Norland likely has faith in Christoph’s research, but he’s treated like a lone figurehead who is just expected to have some grasp of how Geass might tie in with their current fight against the Black Knights. Even after Geass was the main catalyst behind Lelouch and Schneizel’s rise in the ranks, Norland treats it like Christoph’s pet project rather than a major concern to be all-in on. Like Geass doesn’t come up as a strategic reason for why they’ve lost recent battles, and even when Christoph finds the link, he just leaves him alone and ignores much of it.

ASHY SLASHY

The biggest shocker from the last two episodes, however, is what Norland does concern himself with. Ash’s past rams up the intensity with about an episode’s worth of anguish this poor guy has gone through. Being ripped away from an orphanage to become Norland’s adopted child soldier was bad enough, but now you have Ash dealing with Norland killing his brother Nichol.

Nichol’s life and death is extremely tragic, but also makes Ash’s backstory even more harrowing. This grief along with the grief of losing Jugo after he made an earnest connection with him while behind bars is pain that Ash is forced to carry this whole time. It’s also pain that he’s forced to compartmentalized after Jugo’s daughter Sakuya gives him the Geass command that would ultimately give birth to the Roze alter ego.

It’s at this point where everything Sakuya has done up to this point comes off as profoundly shitty. Although she never intended it to be like this, she pretty much made Ash pretend that Nichol was alive and well through Roze by throwing in the need to have him protect Sakuya as he’d protect the most important person in his life. The Roze wig and eyes aren’t too far off from how Nichol would’ve looked either, so even if Ash acknowledged her as Roze, she was still using the visage of what Nichol would’ve looked like if he hadn’t been murdered to make him believe his brother was alive and well. Ash is doled out such a brutal fate for just constantly being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

It doesn’t make it any easier for Roze given that she really didn’t need to Geass him, but wouldn’t have known that unless she went to the orphanage after the fact. She knew that Juzo liked Ash, gave his life for his sake, and wanted him to know about his daughter Sakuya, so the moment her and Ash meant could’ve landed her a bodyguard just by knowing who she was. But it’s far too late, and the show wants to hammer home how it’s all up to Ash as to whether he forgives her or not. And if so, will she’ll have the heart to tell him who Raspberry is too?
