「冷めても美味しいからあげ」 (Sametemo Oishii Karaage)
“Fried Chicken: Yummy Even When It`s Cold”

It’s only a few days out of October, and Shiro is setting his sights on the culture festival. As we get further into the episode, we see some familiar faces in the spin-off such as Issei, Lancer, and Ayako, but also brings some fresher faces into the fold as well. After all this time, it was nice to see one of my favorite side-characters in the old VN, Kaede, appear alongside her friends in an attempt to get an overly luxurious cafe accepted as a a stall for the culture fest. Similarly, having Ayako show up to fall head-over-heels with everyone’s favorite doggo, Lancer, as he tries to woo her with the overabundant flowers he volunteered to carry.

One interesting aspect of the episode was how it delves into Issei’s personal responsibility to help keep the student council together. Under his leadership, they put up a good fight to be able to hold off and struggle to make sure that the culture festival comes along routinely without any hitches or unruly surprises. Whereas we tend to see the side of Issei just as a friendly acquaintance to Shiro or as a stern yet dedicated student council president, this episode dives into why he is willing to push himself as far, and the lengths he would go to make sure that he can make his student body proud by giving his all into organizing the festival with his colleagues.

Although we didn’t get as much Saber in this episode, we did get quite a few moments where we saw how she handled Shiro going out to help the student council and the hunger pangs that came right when Shiro was preparing some dinner for her. And speaking of which, this month we have quite the treat as we got a recipe to something we’ve only seen Shiro cook on the side, fried chicken:

Karaage (Fried Chicken)
Instructions:

1. Cut chicken up into bite-sized pieces

2. Grate garlic and ginger. Once complete, mix it with soy sauce, salt, pepper, and sake to make your marinade.

3. Add your chicken to the marinade and massage it well through a bag.

4. Shiro leaves it for 5 minutes (but I would let it sit for at least an hour or longer)

5. Shake excess marinade from chicken and soak in your egg wash.

6. Mix the same amount of flour and corn starch, and coat your egg soaked chicken with it.

7. Deep fry it for about a minute and a half in oil heated to 160 to 180 degrees Celsius. Then cook the chicken with the residual heat for about a minute. Make a little crack in each one and deep fry it again, repeating the process two or three more times. Then let the chicken cook all the way through. Deep fry it for 30 to 40 seconds at 200 degrees Celsius for that final touch.

    1. Chinese rice wine or a dry sherry can usually be substituted for sake. They all have alcohol in them, though. Not liking alcohol shouldn’t matter; the alcohol cooks off when you heat it. The part that imparts inebriation all goes away, and you’re just going to be left with the flavor from the sake or whatever. That’s what the recipe is going for.
