「ジャヒー様は自慢できない…」 (Jahy-sama wa Jiman Dekinai…)
“The Great Jahy Can’t Brag…”

Episode 03 of Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! shows us a new side of Jahy when she gets drunk off of the power that her new larger mana crystal can provide her. But with Druj’s efforts to be a part of Jahy’s new life on earth, Jahy now has to contend with living a double life as a version of herself who isn’t debasing herself regularly to barely afford rent.

Many of the jokes that land in Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! hone in on the schadenfreude of Jahy having to deal with karma biting her back for the cruelty she showed as the demon lord’s aide. This episode showed it mostly through the juxtaposition between her past life of murdering a random guest at the castle and her current life of serving beers. This was more prominent in the last episode, but this episode had this kind of humor shine through a few key moments such as when Druj swung by the pub where Jahy works.

Because Jahy only gave her a lofty idea of what her life is like without mentioning the whole “fighting for her life to make ends meet” parts, Druj automatically assumes the best of her and thinks she’d have to be the owner of such a drab bar. But because of Jahy’s double-duty of being a server and a fake owner of the Maou pub, she ends up having to serve her former servant, going so far as to taking her insane tab to keep up the appearances she could afford it.

It’s in this particular moment though where you see the wholesome side of Jahy. She might be prone to mistreating her subordinates and writing checks she can’t cash in, but she’s quick to gain a soft spot for helping those around her as she gets accustomed to the feeling. She might see some of her behavior as throwing her pride away, but it shows a lot of emotional growth on her behalf to find reasons what she enjoys about working where she’s at.

Between assisting Tenchou in taking care of the restaurant with her own magic and taking satisfaction in treating Druj after years of mistreatment, it shows that it wasn’t a crapshoot for Jahy to contend with all of this while she tries to rebuild the demon kingdom. Where suffering through the misery that comes from the human experience has been a humbling one for Jahy and it makes her grateful for the small moments where she can make a greater difference than merely gathering the mana crystals.

As far as the show’s comedy goes, I’m still getting a kick out of Druj’s character. I think what I enjoy about her is how she’s so quick to think the best of her former liege that it makes Jahy hype herself up regardless of whether it backfires gloriously. This comes in full force when her gut instinct about seeing Tenchou speaking to Jahy like an employee wasn’t to ask if she works at the restaurant or if she’s really the owner.

Instead, she flashes her scariest face as she is ready to fight Tenchou for disrespecting the Great Jahy-sama. It was hilarious to see how livid and furious she was, and how close she was to going nuclear on Tenchou because of this misunderstanding that Jahy is too prideful to clear up.

There was also a cute Space Pirate short that acts as a retelling of certain segments in the show such as Jahy embellishing her record to Druj or the sibling rivalry between Tenchou and her sister. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the small stretch of time reserved after the credits, but this was a nice little treat at the end of the episode.

  1. I can’t get enough of this show man, Jahy is Satania, except she’s not playing make-believe, she actually used to be powerful until underestimating an opponent set her off on this humbling experience. Looking forward to seeing her growth and more hilarity that will ensue from her unwillingness to come clean about the reality of her situation.
