「孫と魔道具と婚約披露」 (Mago to ma dougu to kon’yaku hirou)
“A Grandson, Magic Device, and Engagement Party”

With tennis apparently all the rage right now (next OPM episode when?) it’s a little surprising KnM managed to avoid the dreaded single week delay, but not enough to make up for the surprise on some other, more romantic (heh) fronts. It may have only been a week ago we got a little touchy feely and promises of more to come, but this much, this fast? Somehow I could forget we actually have super serious story things to deal with in the not too distant future.

While it arguably has been a given for several episodes now, KnM certainly proved its trend bucking intentions this week, going from mild fan service to outright marriage faster than you can say weapons of mass destruction. Frankly the speed of Shin’s engagement really caught me off guard here; I imagined we would be up for some cutesy, slice of life-esque dating moments for the remainder of the season, not full blown preparation for sexy times. Yet here we are with new ring, new outfit, and a new promise of bad things eventually befalling our thoroughly smitten couple—don’t deny, you know that minor plotline pretty much writes itself. While arguable whiplash, it is a development I can get behind because it takes away one of the key sources of ubiquitous isekai tension—i.e. the battle for harem dominance—and leaves space for some seriously entertaining events later on, especially in terms of relationship building. Shin for example may have effectively won the game of life, but going from moonlight smooches to baby making will take some effort, and considering his level of experience (not to mention Sicily’s), you damn well know this trail to lifelong happiness will have more than a few hilarious pitfalls. My reaction face folder is just itching with anticipation.

Of course getting any further movement on the marriage front will depend on the rest of KnM’s story, and here we might see some more development. The short demonoid scene proves our big baddies aren’t out of this season’s picture just yet, while the testing (if you can call it that) of magic against the strongest of demons indicates we can expect some plot-related shenanigans in the not too distant future. After all, when you hand your best and brightest even more ridiculous defense items and have a celebration of future happiness, it’s obvious something is going to happen to ruin the moment and make you remember it’s not all sunshine and lollipops on the path to Gary Stu mastery.

Whatever our big, climactic, peace shattering event will be I honestly don’t know, but someone in our good guy gang is likely to very soon pay the price for everyone’s current lighthearted happiness.

  1. Apart from the odd skipping of side stuff, this is actually pretty faithful to its source. The dating into engagement was about the same, with only a little more stuff added. It still skipped a lot of good stuff that i wish had been in here but it is turning out pretty good.

    1. I think for me it was just the suddenness of it. To go from dating to engagement without any breather in between feels crazy, especially when you consider Sicily’s parents didn’t give an ultimatum—i.e. you don’t have to decide now, but you will eventually. I was expecting a little more thought and some additional heart to heart before they pulled the trigger.

  2. Unless there’s a 2ns season coming, it’s hard to imagine
how things will play out with the three remaining episodes.
I’ve read ahead a bit, so I wonder if the season will end
with a clif hanger… But all in all one of my favorite
watches this season that can’t seem to decide if it’s a
SoL or a dramatic demon-bashing series!

  3. Is it just me or more than a dozen death flags were raised in just one episode. Oh well I dont know if this series would be so daring enough to shift suddenly to another tone. Had this been another series, 4 or more characters would die on the next episode.
