A classic demonstration of how two people can mean the best for each other, but struggle to find the best way to help out until they’re candid enough to have an open heart to heart. We had Tohru insisting one bite of her cooked tail would restore Kobayashi’s terrible physical condition, which like any sane person would if asked to eat the flesh of someone they care about, Kobayashi was very much against. We also had Kobayashi struggling to figure out the best way of approaching Tohru about her past, a conversation with the Dragon of Demise and her company’s CEO proving to be the turning point.

Honestly, this was also a hard lesson for me to learn as a person. You can mean the best, and not have it really be appreciated. We’re often told actions speak louder than words, and to do things for others before waiting to be asked. But I wouldn’t fault the person who is subject to generosity. In fairness, they never asked for it. Perhaps they had more specific needs or qualms that should have been taken into consideration. What can I say? Have some courage. You would be surprised how hard it seems, yet how easy it actually is when you come to the process of directly discussing matters like mature adults.

Putting aside mini Tohru – who I’d even daresay is cuter than Kanna – learning about Tohru’s past was somewhat harrowing. She had crazy burdens of expectation placed upon her shoulders by virtue of her identity. Her father never asked much of her and had hoped she’d grow up as her own free person. But that was never going to be a reality. Her identity demanding chaotic conflict that she detested, and her heart desiring peace between all, she makes a choice to try and defeat the Gods on her own terms and gets smited out of the skies.

Whether that decision was correct or not, and with hindsight, it’s incorrect because Tohru was essentially throwing away her own life, it leads her to a fulfilling life for once on Earth amongst these humans who she had once regarded as foolish. ‘Everything happens for a reason’. I’m not really a believer in the destiny aspect in that statement. But I do believe that people can take the things that happen, good or bad, and use them it as a platform to make the future what they will. Simply put, Tohru exercised her self-determination to break through these chains of fate shackling her down. And with the likes of Naruto vs Neji echoing the same message, I want to confidently say that’s something all of us can do as well.

Anyway, that’s about everything I wanted to discuss. As always, thanks for reading this post and see you all next week!

  1. “I need a plushie of Baby Tohru. Immediately.”

Gebokawa Tohru is HNNNNNGGGGG! (Also, Nendoroid Kanna when?)

    Random thoughts:
    – Never knew Lucoa was one long, long dragon… (*Cue the Long, Long Man’s sexy sax*)
    – Fafnir strangely giving off Ainz (Overlord) vibes in the end card.

Welp, t’was nice to see the actual circumstances of how Tohru came to modern Japan before meeting Kobayashi, but I did not expect Tohru’s father to be the one to give the details, given how…antagonistic (for lack of a better description) he was back in season 1. But he does show that he still cares a lot about his daughter to the point that perhaps he doesn’t want to shackle her with the burden of the endless war against the gods back in their world. I remember a quote that went along the lines of, “I learned the art of war, so my son can learn the arts, culture and histories.” And I’m kinda getting that vibe from Tohru’s father right now.

Next episode’s gonna be the last one for this season. Hope I don’t need to wait 500 years for the next one.

  2. I have always seen those scenes where Tohru providing her severed, cooked tail as a metaphor on how people consume those they love.

Damocles predicament is not uncommon, not when one is a leader for a faction, activist, militant group or terrorists. Leaders will always drag their children into their mess. (unwillingly or willingly) it was foolish for Damocles to think Tohru would be unaffected with the relationship between Dragoons and Humans. Damocles had to have known it it was a matter of time before Tohru would be pulled into the mess.

  3. WOW
that was one deep episode for a lighthearted slice of life
Tohru really had a tough life as a dragon.
She was technically in the chaos faction, but she actually wanted to restore peace, to the point of risking her own life to end war…
It was really good to see how she met and befriended other dorogons of the series.
Kanna really acted as a child
Quetzalcoatl name is literlaly feathered snake, so thats why she was so looooong…
Fafnir is selfish to extreme, but at same time he highlights the need for Tohru to find her own happiness, not to please others
And Tohru has found her happiness in being maid….
