「激戦地回復調査任務!」 (Gekisen-chi Kaifuku Chousa Ninmu!)
“Disaster Recovery Assessment!”

From zippy flying fun and games to…festival fun and games? Well, crepe eating ones at the barest of minimums. Yeah, Sigururi has effectively settled into the ubiquitous traditions many a spunky all-girl cast (support staff notwithstanding) shows love to indulge in, and for all the teasing of shenanigans to come, you can expect them to last a while. We have to bake the bread to butter with suffering later on, and there’s never any time like the present.

After all the misdirection last time concerning Claudia’s paternal origins, colour me surprised (and slightly disappointed) she’s not actually Odin’s daughter. While it makes sense overall—i.e. Odin handing out power like candy is easier than going full Zeus on the global female populace—I kind of wanted to see how the circle of human origins would’ve been squared against divine intervention. Or, you know, seeing how long it would’ve taken for the inevitable shota love story to have permeated through the memetic quagmire. In either case the biggie is the reveal that Claudia killed her previous Valkyrie mates (read: didn’t save them in time), which in turn explains her posting to a backwater location and also answers what we can expect for our latest female flight crew. In these sorts of stories, if the cast isn’t struggling, then there isn’t much to write about.

As for everything else this week, I think pictures above pretty much tell the tale. Miyako proves how home smarts beats book smarts every time; Azu continues to remain my spirit animal with a love of raw fish and refusal to embrace mornings; and Sonoka is someone you don’t want to catch alone on a street corner in the middle of the night (yes, I swear Munou na Nana is not in my mind as I write this!). Couple it with Claudia pulling some tasty reaction faces and darling we have development! And not just the funny kind either. Honestly, such stuff isn’t even that bad overall, but given we know precious little so far about Sigururi’s story and how next week looks set to continue the trend (beach episode four weeks in?), it’s somewhat hard getting and staying invested when this series’ main selling point has largely been relegated to support duty.

I imagine the payoff at the end will counterbalance the price of admission, but Sigururi certainly has some work ahead of it if it’s to retain attention long enough for it to truly spread its wings.

  1. Seems like Odin is an Fan of Despair, let these Girls gain Happiness, friends and such for them rip them apart

But if Odin is here are there the others too?

    Freya and others

    1. It is early, but I’m hard pressed thinking the show isn’t on a timer when it comes to showing some spark. You can do magical girl squad alien invasion stuff no problem, but it needs more than the usual shenanigans to really stand out when the likes of Strike Witches and Assault Lily are airing in the same season.

      1. They seem to have completed their introductory story so I’m hopeful that they’ll shift into a different gear this episode but yeah, they could also just drift along. I haven’t watched those other two shows yet — I tried Witches but it felt like a replay of the beginning of the 2008 show (but less so) — so I can’t compare.

When you have these goofy, morphing, nameless, faceless alien invaders, you do need something else. I think that this show’s characters have more potential than the Witches but we’ll see what they do with them. As you suggest though, they may not have many viewers by then.

    1. i bet most of us here, knows Studio Ghiblis “porco rosso” and there is a scene where the Main Actor “dreamed” of his old Comrads and saw these Ghost Planes flying in the Sky and he want to join them?

      Also, War. War never change

if you put these 2 Imagines together and a bit tasty Emotion and responsibility you get a bit the taste of this Anime Soup

Not everybody will like it, but there are someones out there that love it. Me? i am one of the later ones. But all will rise or fall with Odin’s behavior. These Trees and such do not appear just for his amusement or?

  2. That parting scene was quite heartfelt.
It was a strange feeling getting a bit teary-eyed for someone who barely appeared on screen, but the bit of worldbuilding regarding these people’s relations with faith and gods, and the camaraderie between the people at the base made this scene work. Was not expecting that, so props to them.

    1. I think it helps too that the entire scene didn’t feel forced and the exposition was kept to a minimum. These events get the most traction through atmosphere and preexisting development, and this episode successfully nailed both.

  3. Still, I would love to know , how exactly valkyries are chosen… volunteers, aptitude tests, special schools etcaetera, or just Odin picking a name out of ballot bowl?
I am also curious about the origins of pillars.
And I am suspicious of Odin’s motives. Maybe he actually wants to use whole situation to fill Valhalla with heroes, hence Schwertleite with her “ally casualty ratio” is his favored?

    1. What are the Purpose of the Valkyries?

To guide worthy Warriors to Valhalla

So, Grim Reaper here is the best in this case. because all around her died and got (perhaps) to Valhalla

So Odin is perhaps forcing the “gather an Valhalla” Army for himself. But for what purpose?

to remember Humanity to praise him again?

As i said, it all rise and falls with Odin’s (or who else is faking him) behavior from now on

it is not planed to let Valkyries die

      1. If i want to compare them with Angels, they search the Battlefield and only the bravest, strongest and (propaganda) are worthy to get into Valhalla. So Valkyries are also Angels that select you go up to “Heaven” or right back to “Hell”..

In an way you could say they are the aggressive version of Archangels with Sword and Blood and “killcounter” (IS *cough*)

No, that are not Christians or saints. They are just “Angel Idols”

        1. If we take into account the original myth, wouldn’t his purpose be to gather troops for ragnarok? If he does favour Claudia because of her ally casualty rate, then it looks like he prefers fighter pilots.
