Legend:
Now that every show has had a few episodes to make its case, it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2021 blogging schedule.
As per illustrious tradition, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . or would be, but with multiple episodes under our belts, we’re pretty confident in our picks. Will some of them fall flat in the home stretch? Probably. This is what we’ll stick with for now, barring any unforeseen changes in the near future.
Given it’s summer where the obvious choices are often slim, the coverage this time around is pretty good. While there’s a few potentially deserving series who wound up on the outside looking in (per the usual), the big ones have been hit and there’s still some late premieres later this month which could certainly help spice things up. You never know – it pays to think positive!
In other news, RandomC has finally popped its video cherry over at our brank spanking new Youtube channel (make sure to give feedback if you have it!), and some might have picked up on the fact we also have an Instagram account up and running. Ever wanted us to also use those Twitter and Facebook pages of ours we keep forgetting about? Best pay attention because I can neither confirm nor deny activity on them is about to pick up 😉
Before I leave off too I’ll sum it all up with another big thank you to all. Random Curiosity wouldn’t be the same without you reading and commenting, so make sure you stay safe, stay healthy, and get outside to enjoy summer while it’s still around for this year. And heck maybe even some fantastic anime to boot! Never doubt the potential new seasons can bring.
07/30 Update: After three weeks of chaos, FJ Freeman has decided to embrace the crazy and also cover Heion Sedai no Idaten-tachi (just in case you were afraid it would miss out on the coverage fun).
Pretty good lineup.
Surprised by the continued coverage of Scarlet Nexus.
Too bad about Black Company as I thought that it was pretty funny so far, but seeing that it would probably be up to Pancakes to continue blogging it, that would mean 4 shows in two days, so I completely understand the hesitation.
btw. my best google skills failed me and I just couldn’t find the series featuring the character shown in Raphiel’s introduction post although she seems familiar. A little help plz? 🙂
Apologies for the late reply! IIRC the series Raphiel referenced is The Tutorial is Too Hard (it’s a manga). At least that’s what I can recall XD
As for coverage yeah MBC sort of got the short end of the stick. I’m liking it, but a combination of airing date and me not being sure I’d want to cover a pure comedy influenced the choice. Sucks for me personally this season as a lot of the interesting stuff for me happens to air on Friday and Saturday.
Because “Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid” and “Uramichi Onii-san” are being covered, I’ll give them another chance.
Can’t blame you about dropping The Detective is Already Dead. It’s probably the worst anime of the season, which is really unfortunate because it had potential.
I didn’t even notice that. The latest episode was seriously disappointing.
The sidelined (obviously, hence the title) the most interesting character and replaced her with a “wannabee” detective who is working with a bland protagonist. Yeah, don’t blame the team.
I liked the premise but the execution is comparable to a poor man Monogatari with “detective work” (the case is solved because the main characters say so…) instead of supernatural and some of the worst characters interactions that i ever seen. Sometimes i wondered if those dialogues were written by an alien with extremely basic knowledge about social interactions…which is oddly fitting considering that apparently the author of the novels is an extreme otaku.
I haven’t watched the second episode of ‘Shindeiru’ yet because I haven’t been in the mood but I flipped through it and from a purely visual perspective, it was disappointing. Basically, the camera pointed at one face and then another. It felt like this made up 80% of the episode.
And since it looks like they only borrowed Origami’s design rather than stealing it, this makes it even less interesting visually. It was the most charming element of the double episode. And now it’s gone.
Yeah, it seems that the series is very front loaded in terms of visual quality, with the bulk of the budget spent in the first episode. Ep 2 and 3 are very low quality and are easily beaten by any other slices of life anime. We are basically at the level of talking heads here. Unfortunately i don’t see margins of improvement, so i am dropping the series as well.
Uramichi Onii-san, yay! Feel depressed
Aren’t the show links supposed to point to the entry on the summer preview page?
Honestly? Probably, it’s just become a habit just copying and pasting over the preview schedule without updating the links since this post is more about coverage than the shows themselves. I’ll write down a reminder to account for that and hopefully ensure they do link properly from now on lol
Of the covered shows, I’m gonna watch Aquatope and Mahouka for sure and at least for a while, Shinigami Bocchan, even though the translating is insipidly bad (e.g. ‘a death incarnate’ sometimes for shinigami, or ‘duck of death’ at other times, ‘his maid’ in the title). Since it’s a fairly low-action show, they should treat the dialogue with a bit more respect.
I’ll keep watching Peach Boy as it looks like it’s about to get underway but for some reason, it reminds me of Plunderer although I can’t explain why. It may not happen but I can’t help but worry that it might tilt in that direction.
I had no expectations that 100-man would be covered as its first season wasn’t but it’s the other show I’ll watch for sure.
Oh great! You say “the coverage […] is pretty good” – could have used an exclamation mark there! 😀 I wouldn’t have expected that you’d cover this many shows. Thank you!:)
I probably will only watch Sonny Boy, Fumetsu, Vanitas (and Mahouka?). But I will still follow other your posts from time to time.
It helps we picked up a bunch of new writers to help fill in the blanks 😉
I’m surprise Aquatope is slated for coverage this season. It’s a great series, but IIRC, there was no coverage of Iroduku here a few years back.
And here I thought it would be easier to check out of the Hololive rabbit hole after Coco’s graduation… (*Cue the introduction of Hololive EN’s VSinger, IRyS*) …I thought wrong…
Covered shows:
– Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon S – Three episodes in and I can definitely say, “Kyoto Animation is back…with a vengeance.”
– Shiroi Suna no Aquatope – Seeing Fuuka desperately look for a new purpose in life after losing her purpose as an aspiring idol brings to mind a certain Horny Senchou‘s advice on having healthy relationships.
– Love Live! Superstar!! – Despite some reservations regarding a certain character in the show (which I do hope turns out to be unfounded), everything about Superstar appears pretty good so far.
Will still watch even if not covered:
– Megami-ryou no Ryoubo-kun – Looks like I found someone who inherited Mahiru’s punchy tendencies (kind of) in Kiriya. (Also getting Joshi Ochi vibes from that first half of Episode 2. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) And Serene’s a chuuni? Atena awakens her fetish of being called “onee-chan“? Hope Koushi has a similar “made of iron” constitution as Urashima Keitarou, Yuuki Rito, Kurusu Kimihito and Fuyuzora Kogarashi.
– Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! – I’m expecting this show to be delayed a little more (along with a few other anime) with the ongoing coverage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. And while I’ve read some bad news about Tantei wa Mou, Shindeiru regarding a dip in quality–even with the voiced cameos of
Cat Fox FriendFubuki andGodMatsuri, I’m hoping that Subaru (not the one who “returns by death”), Aqua (not the blue-haired one) and Nene fare better on their anime outing.– Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden 2nd Season – Either I’m not searching hard enough, or I’m not seeing much news (or even additional trailers) regarding this second season.
Guess Kaizoku Oujo won’t be premiering yet this season? Welp, might take a look at Night Head 2041 for some cyberpunk vibes.
I’ll be covering Jahy-sama, but it hasn’t been marked because it’s premiering late in the month and we don’t wanna jump the gun in case it’s not followed past Episode 01. From the looks of it though, I’ll likely end up keeping it because it’s one of the few show this season that I was looking forward to checking out.
I’ll probably end up writing a final impressions post on Megami-ryou. I know lately, I’ve been more selective about what I want to follow through all the way, but it’s not too busy of a season so I can see myself getting to the finale of this and Slow Life without missing enough weeks to drop them.
I think Kaizoku Oujo will be airing on Adult Swim around August, but premiere formally on Japanese TV around October.
Ah, thanks for the clarification (and hjerry-san for the reply below, too). Really eager to see how the Jahy-sama anime turns out (despite not reading the manga). Ditto Megami-ryou. Welp, guess I don’t mind waiting a bit more on Kaizoku Oujo.
And yeah, gotta thank the ongoing Olympics for giving a breather for anime viewers (especially those who have some catching up to do–not just regarding missed anime).
Kaizoku Oujo will be airing dubbed on adult swim starting Aug 14, and will be available dubbed and subbed on crunchyroll at that point, week by week, but only in the west.
It will premeire on japanese TV week to week in October.
