 Not Covering

Now that every show has had a few episodes to make its case, it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2023 blogging schedule.

As per illustrious tradition, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . or would be, but with multiple episodes under our belts, we’re pretty confident in our picks. Will some of them fall flat in the home stretch? Probably. This is what we’ll stick with for now, barring any unforeseen changes in the near future.

Being a relatively quiet season hype-wise no shocker not much is being outright covered, and barring Mushoku Tensei slipping through the cracks (real life schedules truly suck here) I think most of the important stuff was grabbed. Are we going to miss a few potential surprises? Quite likely – but that’s what makes the AOTY post so much fun!

In site-related news expect a pair of Patreon commissions coming out in the next few weeks (Nicc keeps the ideas coming) and finally – at last – me finally doing some site updates. With only one show on my plate and summer being vacation central for most peeps I’ve got the time to stop being a lazy bastard and get things done 😛

Before I leave off I’ll sum it all up as usual with a huge thank you to all. Random Curiosity keeps chugging on thanks to you guys, so make sure you stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy what summer has to offer. The days are long, the weather is hot, and anime has never been more awesome to watch!

    1. As mentioned it’s due to real life scheduling. FJ could only manage one of either Mushoku Tensei or JnK and ultimately decided for the latter. I would’ve grabbed Mushoku, if my next few early weeks weren’t looking so hectic.

Growing up and settling on future plans and goals sucks in terms of free time lol

  1. So 2 out of the 5 that I’m watching (JnK and Undead girl), the others being Muskoku, lastame, and Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon.

The latter is probably my biggest disappointment, and I encourage others to give it a shot.

  2. Watching and covered:
Rurouni Kenshin (2023) – OK, four episodes in and… I guess it’s an alright adaptation so far. Modern animation techniques and technology, widescreen format, an all-star seiyuu cast (including the likes of Nobuyuki Hiyama and Mamiko Noto), Sony Music enlisting their new crop of artists for their songs…BUT…it doesn’t quite pop at you in the same way as the ’96 anime did (at least, not yet). Old weeb bellyaching aside, it’ll be a while before getting to the major story arcs. And watching episode 4 did remind me that the ’96 anime was a slow burn in its own right (but beloved anyway).

    Watching, but not covered:
Mushoku Tensei Season 2 – Still somewhat disappointed that RC’s coverage of the previous season’s second cour wasn’t completed, though I guess that may be because of the assigned blogger’s real-life obligations that can no longer wait (or something along those lines). That said, episode 3 was still pretty OK, despite some scenes from the LN being condensed or omitted. (Director’s Cut when?) Ouch for Rudeus and Sara, though…
Zom 100 – Admittedly, the manga gets into an episodic groove (and feels like a thinly-veiled Japan tourism ad) once the four main characters finally get together, though I sense the anime will at least cover a couple of major story arcs from the manga. Also, the Kosakas did appear in episode 2 and also loved the adaptation expansion of seeing Shizuka’s perspective before meeting Akira. Also also, best friend has arrived in episode 3.
Temple – This feels like a throwback to all those guilty pleasure harem rom-com anime from the Oughties to the New Tens, from the (mostly) celibate male lead who gets into accidental pervert moments, and even that ecchi “Wow!” sound effect. Also, Chiaki Takahashi voicing another sexy teasing onee-san character… (*Cue Shirakami Fubuki’s “YA BE”*)

    On hold:
Genjitsu no Yohane – There’s this gnawing feeling that I’m not as excited to see the Aqours girls now as I did back in the day. Not helped by a waning interest in Love Live post-Nijigasaki. I’ll try and marathon this if I can, along with the Nijigasaki OAV.

Speaking of marathons, NieR:Automata Ver1.1a just dropped the last four episodes for its first cour. Also, for the naval shikikans, Azur Lane: Queen’s Orders just released their two-episode OAV as well.

(OT: In between HoloSummer going full swing and the debuts of Hololive EN Gen 3–a.k.a.: Advent… Whew!)

    Thanks as always. 07
