Senyu. – 01
「勇者、旅立つ。」 (Yuusha, Tabidatsu.)
“The Hero Journeys Forth.”
Perhaps the most important thing for a comedy short to possess is good humour. Does Senyu. fit the bill? Hell yeah! Perhaps this will actually be Yamakan’s chance to redeem himself after what happened with Fractale!
Senyu. does not boast a complex plot, but it does still have some charm in that department. One thousand years ago, the hero Creasion sealed away Demon King Rchimedes. Now demons have begun to appear in the world once more and the King (Ogino Seiro), along with his Cabinet Minister (Sasaki Hiroo) sends out seventy-five people who look sort of like they might be the hero’s descendants to deal with the threat. We follow Alba (Shimono Hiro), the forty-fifth of these heroes, and his partner Ross (Nakamura Yuuichi) as they set out on their adventure.
This first episode was funny. Genuinely funny. Between the multiple instances of meta humour, ranging from screwing with the character titles onscreen to the conversations with the narrator (delivered by the wonderful Nakata Jouji no less), and the many RPG gags, there was plenty of amusement to be had for me as a video game fan. The dynamic between the two leads helps a lot in this respect, with Alba being a completely useless hero and Ross not being remotely interested in helping out.
Visually, it’s actually surprisingly interesting what with the clash of styles coming from the traditional animation, the stick figures, and the wonderfully stylistic paintings. The animation itself is not spectacular, but that’s no surprise given these are shorts that run for only four minutes and thirty seconds! All in all, it’s a decent watch with very little time investment. If you’re into fantasy – RPGs in particular – there’s absolutely no reason not to check out the first episode at the least!
tl;dr: @MoombaDS – Short but funny. I like this anime already! #Senyu
