This episode was full of Saya. All episodes should be full of Saya.

A Thousand Pictures of Blushing Saya

Other characters probably did things this episode, but who cares it’s a Saya episode! And it’s long overdue. By now Dagashi Kashi’s pattern is well understood—there’s a candy to be discussed, Hotaru is bonkers, etc—to the point that Hotaru was openly talking about “today’s theme” or “today’s candy.” Which works when the gags are good, but breaks down somewhat when the author/script writers aren’t able to hold it all together through sheer force of artistic style. Thus, it’s nice to have something to lean on at times, and as far as crutches go, I’m happy to spend a lot of time poking at Saya’s eternal crush on Coconutsu.

Hotaru & Tou-kun’s Insanities

During the first half, I laughed when Hotaru dropped the rock (not that one), and when Tou-kun sacrificed himself to give Coconutsu an eyeful of Saya’s starry pantsu. Though I did question that too. Why her instead of Hotaru, who’s less likely to punish him, and whose panties he might actually enjoy seeing? Maybe he’s helping Saya in his own way, or just going all-in on the tease. Either way, that’s about the extent that anyone else drew my attention this episode. The rest was all Saya.

Back to Saya

But seriously, how cute is she? Hotaru asking if Saya wanted to work at Coconutu’s shop in the first half was a good impetus, I hope that doesn’t get forgotten, but the second half was full-on blushing loli Saya fun. It was just adorable seeing her crush go back so far, and seeing how she was more mature than Coconutsu back then. Or, maybe it’s just that Coconutsu has always been a dense idiot, at least where Saya is concerned. Hng~!

I do find it fascinating that Coconutsu was as much of a hyper-candy otaku when he was younger—he was as much of a dagashi nerd then as Hotaru and You-san are now. Really though, it’s all just a vehicle for blushing Saya. She was a little ecchi-minded back then, wanting to play doctor so much. Too bad Coconutsu is an oblivious quack. I’m on your side, Saya-shi! Don’t give up.

tl;dr: @StiltsOutLoud – Blushing Saya episode + loli blushing Saya episode = best episode #dagashikashi 06

Random thoughts:

  • Draped-over-shoulders-twintails Saya is nice too.
  • So, now they have to succeed the store together? (No Stilts, you’re on the Saya ship. Stay strong!)
  • He definitely remembers. Flags. Flags everywhere!
  • Stilts’ fiction update: In anticipation of my next novel coming out soon™, my first book, Wage Slave Rebellion, is on sale now. It’s only $1.99 at the moment, and after Saturday it’ll go back to its usual price. If you’ve ever thought of giving my book a shot, act fast. Also, maybe tell your friends? I’ll love you either way.

My first novel, Wage Slave Rebellion, is available now. (More info—now in paperback!) Sign up for my email list for a FREE sequel novella. 1. This is exactly the kind of episode I wanted. Now, How about one with Saya and Hotaru being friends and one about Kokonutsu’s transition from candy entusiast to manga artist.

    And more You’s videos.

I think Tou sees Hotaru as a woman, but pranking Saya is childish and harmless because those three have spending years together. He didn’t think about the meaning.

I won’t say Dagashi Kashi is the best comedy of the year, but waiting for two weeks was painful. I missed my share of Saya and Hotaru.

    1. Saya’s also his twin (IIRC) sister, so he definitely doesn’t think anything of it. No matter how much of a perv Tou is, he doesn’t seem like he has the guts to do anything to a girl he’s actually attracted to. ._.

  2. Oh, so the star joke had to do with Saya wearing star-patterned underwear? I was wondering what that was about.

This might be my favorite episode so far, More Saya was just a complete win. The flashback was the cutest thing. Goodness, this show just has to keep giving me reasons to ship Kokonotsu with each girl.

  3. This episode gives me diabetes (even though I already have one). Seriously, Hotaru is a beauty BUT Saya is the best girl!! Hnnnnnnnnggg!! I’m also sure that Coco is conscious of Saya.
