「新たなる試練 UNBELIEVABLE GAME」 (Aratanaru Shiren UNBELIEVABLE GAME)
“A New Trial – Unbelievable Game”

It’s all about that shipping, in-universe and out.

Shipper On Deck

A harem series often works more smoothly when the lead is actively pursuing a harem, as opposed to when they “just happen” to trip across all the right flags to win every girl’s (or guy’s) hearts. Likewise, a OTP romance like Sousei no Onmyouji works more smoothly when it has a shipper on deck (trope!) to instigate all the romantic hijinks. Enter Arima, AKA pervy underpants guy.

I’m a hopeless romantic at heart, so you better believe I enjoyed this episode. Seeing the two of them blush and bumble about was adorable, as were the (nicely justified) romantic moments and pantsu peeks. (I always thought Benio was silly for wearing a skirt while fighting, but wearing spats is smart—this episode excepted.) It’s certainly a forced way to get them to grow closer insomuch that one of the characters is directly forcing them, but Arima’s actions make sense in the context of his goals, so I really don’t have a problem. Plus, shipping furiously / awwww!

Letting Rokuro In

While in the same vein as my above point, I found it interesting that Benio seems to be letting Rokuro in faster than he’s accepting her. Not that it’s not a mutual evolution, but he’s been wrapped up with his own entrance back into the exorcist world, so it stands to reason that she’s more vulnerable to change when her overall life goal hasn’t been shifting. (She did have to move though, which can be disorienting.) Partially I’m talking about where she seemed to be thinking about how the bath was large enough for both her and Rokuro—shipping intensifies!! But also, she mentioned her older brother and then told Rokuro about him when asked. That’s a level of closeness that she could have rejected, but she didn’t. She’s letting him in.

Also, and this probably goes without saying, but Benio’s brother is hella alive. He’ll probably end up being an antagonist too. I haven’t read ahead, I don’t know that for sure, but I do know storytelling in general and shounen anime in particular. Dead respected character + no body? He’s super alive.

tl;dr: @StiltsOutLoud – Romance ensues as the perverted chief exorcist pushes Rokuro & Benio together. Physically, ufufu~ #sousei 07

Random thoughts:

  • I like how Benio doesn’t get too mad when Rokuro sees her pantsu, since she recognizes that it’s not his fault (after some initial perturbation—look it up, it’s a real word). Benio is great! Also, pantsu as an important plot element? What is this, To LOVE-Ru?
  • What a wonderful way to die.
  • Rokuro thinks he’s always honest with his feelings? HAH!

  1. “Letting Rokuro In” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Seriously though, I knew this episode was gonna be shippy based on the preview last time, but not quite this level of shippy. Pretty much all of this other than the part where they’re made to share the house is anime-original. I get why, though, since this anime only has 12 to work with this season, IIRC, and these two only start to get a bit more closer relatively later on in the manga.

But, hey, the inner shipper in me certainly ain’t complaining. Cast off! ⛵

  2. I’m really starting to lean towards true on that 50 episode rumor considering this episode had like… 5 minutes total that weren’t filler. If a 1-cour season would end where us manga readers all expect it to end, Pierrot would have to be absolutely blitzing through the canon material for the remaining 5 episodes to get there. And considering the overall pace thusfar… I can’t really expect them to switch gears that drastically.

  3. I’ve had a lot of issues with this show, but this was a genuinely decent episode. First off, barely any screen time for that annoying familiar. Thank god.
Benio and Rokuro didn’t yell at each other throughout the entire episode; in fact, they worked together quite well. Nice progression for their relationship, and there was even a little sexual tension between the two of them. Benio’s comment while she was in the bath…Benio 2lewd.

  4. Yes, Benios brother is definitely alive. A character that looks like him (green hair) is in the OP after all. And: I rewatched the first episodes and among the friends of little Rokuro is also a kid with the same kind of hair, although we never see his/her face. But I bet its Benios brother.
