Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 24 (END)

「白銀の意思」 (Shirogane no Ishi)
“Silver Will”

XEBEC’s original series draws to a close, and while it may not stand-out in the eyes of many, it manages to remain atypical until the very end. Almost all anime stereotypes that we’ve come to know were avoided and all the loose ends were wrapped up rather nicely. The writers managed to leave things open-ended for a potential sequel too.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 23

「反撃」 (Hangeki)
“Counterattack”

At the eleventh hour, Argevollen still manages to surprise. The end is finally in sight and the plot’s come together in an unpredictable yet clearly thought out way, which is proving to be the series’ best aspect now.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 22

「鹵獲」 (Rokaku)
“Capture”

Just when I thought Argevollen was out of twists and turns, it manages to squeeze another significant one in the final three episodes—all of the prototypes supplied to both Arandas and Ingelmia were planted with a hidden mechanism that allows Perfevollen to take control of them.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 21

「動乱」 (Douran)
“Disturbance”

Well it looks like the series is finally reaching the point where Samonji clashes with Holmes/Garp and Cayenne with Zarl Lontar, as the stage is set for a finale with an army of new Trail Kriegers on both sides.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 20

「もうひとつの意識」 (Mou Hitotsu no Ishiki)
“Another Mind”

Well if there’s one thing that Argevollen definitely has going for it, it would be its rather unpredictable nature. The developments may not be shocking, but the direction the series takes almost always is.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 19

「決意」 (Ketsui)
“Resolve”

The questions surrounding “Perphevollen” were answered quickly this week, as the Evangelion-like Trail Kriegers do in fact function as a “hive mind”.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 18

「訣別」 (Ketsubetsu)
“Farewell”

Well it looks like the writers decide to do a bait-and-switch, as the “NR” in “NR Syndrome” stands for “Nanjou Reika” after all.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 17

「敗北」 (Haiboku)
“Defeat”

The long overdue new opening sequence is finally here and humorously enough, it looks a lot more exciting than the series has actually been.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 16

「凍結」 (Touketsu)
“Freeze”

After a battle-centric episode last week, it feels like we’ve hit a bit of an intermission in the series where the characters do a lot of talking and there are a lot of close-up shots of their faces.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 15

「嵐 (シュトゥルーム)」 (Arashi (Shuturuumu))
“Sturm”

Considering that it was only last week that we were introduced to the “NR Syndrome”, the plot proceeded along fairly quickly to draw attention to the neurological side effects of piloting Kybernes’ prototype Trail Krieger.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 14

「亡霊」 (Yuurei)
“Ghost”

I may have jumped the gun when I thought Richthofen was going to get a new prototype Trial Krieger back in episode seven, but seven episodes later and we have just that.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 13

「青と藍」 (Ao to Ai)
“Blue and Indigo”

In a series with too many characters in insignificant roles already, XEBEC somehow felt the need to introduce a new main/sub character in the second half of Argevollen. Enter Natalie Namie Portman (Uchida Maaya)—a talented pilot in training but inexperienced with real-world combat.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 12

「ナンジョウ・レイカ」 (Nanjou Reika)
“Nanjou Reika”

While it was easy to tell what emotional response the writers were going for in this flashback episode, I unfortunately can’t say that it worked that well on me.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 11

「拳(いかり)」 (Kobushi (Ikari))
“Fist (Rage)”

If there’s one thing that Argevollen’s done well so far–whether inadvertently or intentionally–it would be how it’s almost impossible to tell what’s in store every episode.

Shirogane no Ishi Argevollen – 10

「不在の果て」 (Fuzai no Hate)
“The Limits of (His) Absence”

Rather than fight the pace that Argevollen is trying to draw me into each week, it seems a lot easier and enjoyable to just go along with it.
