Currently in the transition between worlds, Rika accounts the previous storylines she has encountered. Like Keiichi showing Bonds that you don’t need steroids to do some serious damage with a baseball bat (or maybe it was roid rage after all). Shion throwing away any chance at a babysitting career. Rena showing off her enormous power level (not quite 9000). They may be her dear friends, they may be kind people, but they cannot escape the clutches of fate. Events will play out as they are meant to, the rules remain the same.

Rika wakes up on some dirt path with Hanyuu next to her – we can see her now, albeit in a translucent ghost form. They’ve been sent back to before the Watanagashi Festival again. Keiichi, Satoko, Mion, and Rena (no Shion) rush to Rika’s side to check if she’s ok – Rika first asks Keiichi if he remembers anything about the night of the Watanagashi, to which he replies with a “how could I, this is my first year here!” I’m in despair!!!

That night, Rika assumes her typical position at the base of the fridge, but this time we can see Hanyuu sitting next to her. Rika eats some spicy pickles (I think) and Hanyuu goes ballistic – somehow most of Horie Yui’s roles involve a huge weakness to spicy things. At least this shows us that the two are not only spiritually connected, but have some sort of physical connection as well.

The next morning we start by visiting Satoko at the clinic, where a smoking hot nurse Takano and Irie-sensei are treating her. Rika and Irie talk about Satoko’s odd condition, while Takano takes Satoko to an isolated room and does some of those ink blot tests on her.

Afterwards, the two girls head over to the game shop, where there’s some special event going on. K1, Mion, and Rena rendezvous up with them and they head inside. The game is supposed to be the typical Karuta where they draw cards, but at Keiichi’s request, gets changed into none other than Kiki Ippatsu. The game kicks off and goes well, but Mion cuts it short by leaving for her job. How about the doll that Keiichi wins?

Why, he gives it to Mion. Rika thinks back to the progression of events in a previous world where Keiichi had given the doll to Rena, eventually leading to her psychological imbalance and the death of everyone…

Could this world be different? Faced with a new hope, Rika marches forward with optimism.

Thoughts

The constant feeling of inevitability of the first arc invades the first portions of this episode, with Rika continuously naming events as they happen. And yet, the Keiichi of this new world seems different. More confident. More thoughtful. More reliable. Could it be the experiences of the previous worlds building up unconsciously in his mind? Rika’s hope stems from Keiichi’s changed character – every move he makes seems to divert from the established paths, every decision leading away from the catastrophe that all the other worlds eventually arrived at.

Still, I’m sure the world won’t be that kind to ol’ Rika – there’s bound to be some twist that happens down the line that totally screws everything up again. However, doesn’t the twist seem to be coming later and later now? It’s like when you’re wringing out a wet cloth – you start at the top, and work your way down, until you’ve chased all the loose water droplets out. Maybe Keiichi’s unconscious memories will eventually surface, and put an end to this never ending cycle.

So what is Hanyuu’s role in all of this? It’s not yet clear – if anything, it seems to give Rika someone to talk to. If I had to go through hell, it’d sure be easier if I had a friend to go through with me.

  1. It is interesting that most of the characters, especially Keiichi, unconsciously have a memory of the other worlds. They don’t remember it but somehow the subconscious make them avoid the tragedies?

Anyway, it was really cute that Rika-chan spirit or whatever it is. Whatever Rika made her body to happen, the other girl will feel it.

It is because there are something similar to parallel worlds in this story. Watch the season so that you can have an idea of what is going on. Also. the first season is much more suspensive, you will like it better than this season.

Although, i remember that the first season at first it was really scary sometimes. So much that it kinda made me not want to watch it. But i couldn’t help myself to watch it because i really wanted to know the mysteries behind everything.

Definitely, Keiichi should have gave Mion the doll the first time. I mean come-on, Mion is totally *omochikaerii~* material xD. Anyways, her reaction to Keiichi’s gift made my day(well it is 12:30 AM here but better late then never, right?).

You should lurk more xD. I’ve been doing it for a while ;/. Though, I’m mostly here for the screencaps ._.”.

  4. The story is somehow like Pirates of the Caribbean 3 to me: Far to many story lines to follow -> confusing -> no fun watching.
But well, Higurashi was always a “special” anime when it comes to that, so I guess you rather like it or not lol.

  5. It’s the “reset button.” Only Studio Deen can rock it like the bling on their neck and fingers. Out of all the basically redundant crap Geneon sells; this is their only crowning achievement.

So yeah. We finally get to see Hanyuu… But why the hell were some of the characters (Rena and Mion) so evil during the first part of “When Kira Dies?”

  6. For people that didn’t watch season 1 (actually there’s no further explanation regarding of time being reverted back.
Actually Hanyuu is the one responsible for resetting the time back to days before the Himazawa Festival giving Rika and others to solve the mystery of Himazawa, this cycle of time would end if Rika stays alive after the events that led to everyone die or some die and Rika also dies. If this keeps on, sooner or later they would avoid the tragedy.

  7. Ahahaha, chibi Rika drinking at night and auauauau~ getting drunk instead.
Finally Minagoroshi-hen begins. This chapter will finally give the most important answers to the rest of the questions which were not answered in Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi. Note the information that Rika gave about the “rules of the world” in the very beginning of this episode.

dammit, someone needs to write and publish AT LEAST 20 novels for higurashi and translate it to english, so I could fit em on the 2nd row of my custom-made, golden shelf (3rd and 4th row are for the animes, and 1st is for me higurashi models) .

Novels (not light novels) have been announced for Japan, with 7 volumes taking up the first 4 arcs. Since they’re being published by Kodansha, there’s a good chance Del Rey will pick it up.

woohoo!! exactly what I want!! Sure, light novels are fun, but I do enjoy novels better. Though I wish there would be more volumes involved. 😀 Got a link to more info?

Looks like the original story ended, and the Minagoroshi-hen starts!
I wonder what the last story will be in the Anime… either the original ending in Ryuukishi-07’s story or the ending in the PS2 game.
I prefer the PS2 ending tho..

  12. Ya but this is higurashi you know, i admire K1 trying to fight it, but im sure just like jaalin said a new twist will come out. Um is everyone forgetting about our killer loli Rena? Wont she get pissed off that K1 gave the doll to Mion and not her? Lol if there’s a twist then this is the most likely case, or who knows the absent Shion couldve been the one to go crazy cuz she wasnt there thus not given a doll by k1 as well lol. Or lets take this the first season style and say that Mion is actually Shion! And the real Mion gets pissed off and causes everyone’s death as well. If anyone hasn’t noticed it yet, Mion is yet the only one to not go psychopath.

It has already been confirmed that the last arc of the anime is 祭囃し編 (Matsuribayashi-hen), so the anime will have the original ending.

  15. Nah I don’t think Rena is going to make a big deal of this. It’d be a lot more obvious if some information from the game had been revealed here. Besides, Mion’s situation was a different one from Rena and not getting that doll was key in a set of events that turned Shion into a creepy torture killer. They got a good break to start things off by avoiding the Shion scenario. Plus it seems Keiichi is pretty stable so he shouldn’t get paranoid and think his friends are out to kill him. Left to see how Rena does and how the rest shapes out.

Impossible to know how things will shape out. But have to go with Rika’s attitude and keep hoping it’ll work out. They definitely won’t get out of this if she goes with the attempt last time in doing almost nothing.

  16. Well, it seems we’re on right track… K1 seem to be trusting Rika enough to accept her story, and Rika herself has a renewed determination to change her fate. They just dont know yet what are they up against (a squad of spec forces equivalent, see last episode). I wonder if even with help of local police (Ooishi be damned with his clumsiness) they can avert the tragedy…
