Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan – 12

「フライパンだけで作るローストビーフ」 (Fry Pan dake de Tsukuru Roast Beef)
“One-Pan Roast Beef”

There have been many amazing episodes of Emiya-san, but this Christmas episode has got to be one of the cutest. With Illya inviting Emiya and his friends over to celebrate the holidays with her, the cast is given the chance to mingle as they share food and company with one another. It is also an opportunity to see how fun some of the side characters can be when they get the chance to shine as they prepare for the Christmas festivities.

The mood is right and the spirits are up with Emiya and his friends, but it was great to see how some of the cast from Illya’s perspective is given time to shine this time around, notably Illya’s servants Sella and Leysritt. Leysritt is particularly given plenty of humorous moments as she ends up driving the van carrying Rin, Sakura, Rider, and Saber through a risky shortcut. Her mischevious streak is given a funnier take with how lackadaisical she is about crashing the van off of a cliff or pressing Sella’s buttons when she gives an out-of-character compliment to Emiya’s cooking. The gradual warmth that Sella takes towards Emiya was also funny considering how much pressure she placed on Emiya to make sure that his food was worthy of being on Illya’s plate. However, the scene-stealer in this episode was Berserker, who ended up being extremely adorable with how dedicated he was to get a larger tree for Illya and how he accepted the Berserker icing cookies that Illya and Sakura made him.

Above all else, it was great to see everyone come together to enjoy their Christmastime together. Rider made sure the girls were able to make it to Illya’s mansion in one piece, Rin was able to make apple compote with wine to go with their stolen, Saber brought her appetite with her, and, along with Sella’s Christmas dinner spread, Emiya brought along potato pancakes and roast beef.

Roast Beef

1. When a roast is at room temperature, salt it generously. Rub salt and mashed garlic into the meat as well and wrap it in plastic wrap for 15-30 mins.

2. Pour oil into a frying pan and cook the mashed garlic pieces used to season the meat over low heat. Remove the garlic, turn up the heat, and then put the meat in the pan.

3. Cook all four sides, two minutes each, browning the surface well.

4. Put the lid on and turn off the heat, letting the residual heat cook it further for 5 minutes.

5. Turn the meat over and then put the lid back on. Cook on very low heat for 3-4 more minutes.

6. Make sure the temperature is correct. [Emiya pierces the meat in the center with a skewer for a few seconds and puts it up against his lips to test the temperature, knowing its cooked through if it’s warm. However, you will probably want to use a thermometer to check if the middle is to your liking.]

7. Season with pepper and cover with foil/wrapping for 30 minutes to let it rest.

[If you’d like, make a gravy using the leftover au jus]

Now that’s an A+ Riding skill.

I’m so happy this anime is continuously giving us early month wholesomeness for an entire year. It’s confirmed that next January will be the last episode.

    Leysritt: “I’m taking a shortcut.”

    [EUROBEAT INTENSIFIES]

Looks like Leysritt took driving lessons from Irisviel.

Potato pancakes? Are they technically similar to hash browns? Because I love eating those whenever I get the chance.

Damn, that’s one scrumptious-looking Noche Buena meal. And I’m reminded Christmas is just a few weeks away.

Part of me wishes that this show can continue well into 2019 (read: have a second season), if only to see the Fate characters in a relaxed setting and for more food pron. At least there’s still January next year for the last episode, but it’ll feel a bit bittersweet to see this monthly series end.

      Incognito-

European-style potato pancakes are typically made with potatoes, eggs, flour, and baking powder as the base, with either sweet or savory additions. If they’re made well they have that really great hashbrown crunch. They are incredible.

Garlic on roast beef? À chacun son goût, I suppose.

You shouldn’t be leaving raw meat out of the fridge for too long, especially if you live somewhere hot. Better to put the garlic mixture on the beef first and put it back in the fridge for a couple of hours, then take it out for no more than an hour if your room temperature is around 20C/70F, but less time if it’s significantly warmer.

When browning the meat, make absolutely sure it’s done all over, not just on four sides, because things like campylobacter may on the surface and they need to be killed off. You can see that was done in the show, but it doesn’t explicitly state it in the recipe.

As for the core temperature of the meat, as long as you aren’t cooking for children (is Illya a child???), the elderly, pregnant women or the immunocompromised then in countries with reliable food hygiene regimes it’s safe enough to use the “lip test” for beef as long as the meat has been thoroughly browned on the outside. Otherwise, you really need a meat thermometer (preferably digital) and follow the USDA recommendation to cook it to a minimum of 63C/145F and then wait at least 3 minutes before eating it.

Thanks CHOYA, for putting the anime’s directions in how to cook Roast Beef. Want to see if I can try this.

And here I thought most Magi were against using modern technology. I guess maybe Jubstacheit gave in, wondering if that old relic is still alive.

Such a happy atmosphere, now hopefully Gilgamesh doesn’t come crashing in. Notably, I sort of wanted to see Archer join, we never heard his thoughts about Illya in any of the routes.
