「機能回復訓練」 (Kinō Kaifuku Kunren)
“Rehabilitation Training”

Someone put a muzzle on the boy before I ring his neck myself. I’m surprised no one has had the impulse to do it. Will he ever mature in the coming future? Or am I to expect this level of tantrums on a regular? Not that Zenitsu’s tirades ruin things for me, but they kind of almost definitely do. If they were just a little shorter, I feel as though I would want to get to know him better. But right now, every time he appears on screen, I automatically flinch in response to what’s about to come. It’d be nice to feel excited when I see him for a change.

But don’t let my rant about Zenitsu fool you. The rest of the episode was more than satisfactory. I’m impressed with Kanao, who we’re going to learn more about in the next episode. Her training has gone much farther than Tanjirou’s but is that only because she’s been chosen to be Shinobu’s heir? Or was her teacher someone even better than Urokodaki?

I’d never considered there would be characters of the same age who would be stronger than Tanjirou but Kanao has proven me wrong. I’m looking forward to seeing how he fares next time he goes up against her, or at least, how he’s improved, even if that means he loses again. Next time, he might even get her to utter a few words or perhaps spark a reaction out of her. She might be a tough cookie on the outside but maybe not so much on the inside. And Tanjirou has his ways.

Which reminds me about his conversation with Shinobu. What a wound he went to dig in and what a story we got. It’s a sad tale of two sisters and one I don’t want to spoil for anyone who might not have watched just yet. It’s better to just experience the moment with the characters rather than read my antics about it. I will however say that after their encounter, I’m almost 100% convinced that Shinobu will perish. Will it be this season or next? I can’t confirm but there’s no way a character doesn’t disappear or die off after saying: “I know my dream can live on with you.”

Let’s hope I’m wrong though because I am thoroughly enjoying peeling the layers off of Shinobu’s tough exterior. No spoilers please.

With that, I just want to conclude by saying: No Kimetsu no Yaiba episode is complete without Nezuko. Even if she’s asleep, we deserve a clear shot of her adorable chibi state.

  1. Could this season end with a bang? I kinda doubt it but it would be nice to have some fight scene in the future episodes.
Shinobu is a very intriguing character and I think Kanao will also proven to be the same. I expect a lot from her story next ep.

    1. Nope, the remaining episodes should be fairly laid back. One more episode to wrap up the training, maybe half of the last episode to shift focus to what’s happening on the demon side of things and then the other half probably for some retrospection and setting the stage for the next arc and what better be a second season announcement.

  2. Zenitsu…… he’s a little hit or miss with me. I can see what they’re going for with him, but unlike Inosuke, they didn’t mellow him out any. Inosuke started as this obnoxious, child stomping, fight obsessed being. He still kinda is that, but once we learned through Tanjiro how he ticks, it was easy to guide him into acceptable behavior. Zenitsu on the other hand shines best when he does his sleep fighting, and the lengths it takes to get him there is literally dragging him there kicking and screaming. We haven’t yet gotten to a point where we can mitigate his annoying tendencies to shortcut into a more competent reliable companion. I am anime only, so I hope this comes soon, mostly for his sake. I said from episode 12, that his technique is amazing, but one of these days, he’ll come across a demon that will kill him before he can be frightened into unconsciousness. There will be something that won’t give him a chance to slowly warm up into the techniques that he, admittedly rather impressively, pounded into his subconscious. That speed of his can put him far above the others, but he just can’t utilize it yet. I think it would be very neat to see someone fight purely with Iado

  3. It seems like a lot of people are finding Zenitsu to be instant cringe / annoying. But i can’t help but be amazed by the work of Shimono Hiro in every line of delivery.. it takes some skill in sustaining that level of manic hyperbole without turning into a completely unintelligible mess.

Personally I like most of what Zenitsu has brought to the show. I can see why he grates though. And I’m not completely immune to it. Sometimes the cringe is involuntary.

  4. It’s a little too much for me when both Zenitsu and Inosuke are going crazy at the same time, but I love them both individually. I ship him Zenitsu with Aoi already. But I guess he’s a divisive character, huh.

I have a tendency to like characters others hate, like how I loved Excalibur from Soul Eater (I even thought him being annoying was a “joke” but then I found people REALLY hate him, it shocked me).
