「真実と彼女」 (Shinjitsu to Kanojo)
“Truth and Girlfriend”

Ahh, from the joys of agonizing computer upgrades to total and complete package diabetes, I think I’ve had my fill of ups and downs. Hard complaining too much about the latter though, because after weeks of frolicking with the disaster that is Kazuya, we actually got a pretty sweet episode this week. And if that wasn’t enough, just wait for next week. Oh yes, it’s Mami time.

For all that I may rip into Kanojo Okarishimasu for sticking close to the romance strategy (often a little too close), Sumi is arguably one of the better characters featured of late. While the shy introverted girl is a dime a dozen in the cookie cutter isle, Sumi for me plays the part well by going all in on the concept. This ain’t generic moe or the usual cuteness, it’s full blown social anxiety tied up in a girl who’s really just trying her hardest. And the best part is Kazuya, bless his annoying soul, complements the game at play here. It would be too easy to just have Kazuya as embarrassed and squeamish as Sumi for example, but because he’s coming to the situation from a level of experience (heh), we get some fine—and dare say organic—development on the part of our latest pairing. While I don’t expect the magic to last that long (in part because once Sumi develops feelings the drama will commence), considering what we could’ve received, I’ll take all the cuteness I can get. All of it.

Where I imagine some will be waiting with baited breath though is with Mami, and for pretty obvious reasons. Frankly I expected her back sooner rather than later, but in the frame of discovering Kazuya’s (and Chizuru’s) secret? Oh now that’s just dirty. Unlike Ruka you know the pint sized blondie won’t be preserving her bullets given how Kazuya has thoroughly wormed under her skin and clearly upset whatever plan or whimsy she had on her mind. While doubtful we’ll discover the specific reason of her angst before the ending next week (that would likely be an episode in of itself), at least the drama will be plentiful because you can bet Kazuya is going to do whatever is needed to keep the damage restricted to close friends and known rental girlfriends.

Quite a good thing Ruka is around as the “official” girlfriend for these kind of scenarios then wouldn’t you say? Yeah, this finale is going to be a blast.

  2. Yes.

    YES.

    YESSSS!

Best cinnamon roll has arrived in an explosion of cuteness!

Shame Mami had to come out and start scheming something. Despite whatever circumstances she has later on in the manga, she’s honestly still a manipulative b***h/hate sink at this point. Now that she found out Sumi and Chizuru are rental girlfriends, I wonder what she’ll do with that information. (Also, she found out about Sumi being a rental girlfriend–and Chizuru working under that same company–just by googling her name… *shivers* And that’s why Google is a sellout, kids. Never give personal information to those avaricious f**ks.)

Not to mention the next episode is the season finale. (I’m already dreading the kind of trainwreck the season finale will leave–at least before switching to the manga.)

  3. Sumi was as adorable as the OP had been suggesting the entire time. The scene with Sumi and Mami was hilarious, with that “Stay, girl, stay”.
I’m looking forward to that finale. Mami may be the worst girl in this show, but her homewrecker personna certainly knows how to make things interesting. But I thought her return to action would happen by catching Kazuya with Ruka, since she’s the one all over Kazuya most of the time. And since she has a history of rental, it would serve a similar purpose.

    1. I suspect it’s been played up this way to give a reason to draw Kazuya and Sumi closer. It won’t be long before Chizuru finds out how Mami got a hold of her rental history for example, and from there it’s easy to guess Sumi is going to feel like it’s all her fault. Queue the necessary makeup event with Kazuya and the inevitable inception of feelings for the kid.

  4. I know of putting yourself in tough situations for self improvement, but Sumi just jumped straight into the lions mouth. Willingly. XD
Certainly a brave and earnest girl. I can strangely see why Chizuru recommended Kazuya to take her out. A good play on Kazuya’s strengths there. I think a lot of people will actually make her feel discouraged if they mentioned her suitability for the job.

Next week looks like fun. Never really understood what Mami’s endgame is.
