「館山基地合流遊撃隊!」 (Tateyama Kichi Gouryuu Yuugeki-tai!)
“Tateyama Joint Forces!”

From magical girl Valkyrie shenanigans to…preparatory foreshadowing? Yeah, Sigururi loves its teasing alright. Frankly this is one series my doubts absolutely refuse to disappear from, yet undeniably there’s something big is coming down the pipeline. When you’ve got gods playing coy and older sisters popping out the woodwork, best be sure things aren’t as rosy as they seem.

After all the suspense of surprise appearance at the end of last week, new girl Yayoi proved, well, less than surprising. Whether it’s down to experience or simple desensitization, having Lizbet’s claim to fame being unfortunate events regarding the backstory of Sonoka is honestly a little disappointing. Pretty obvious said events involved death of a dear friend due to particular decision making after all, and that these decisions aren’t solely the fault of Yayoi because obviously the circumstances of the situation (after proper reveal mind you) limited the potential of best outcome possible. Not to say that what’s coming regarding these two is wholly predictable—that would be definitely be putting the cart before the horse—but there’s no denying Sigururi is following the well-trodden path when it comes to these developments. No matter the fun of big sister-isms, eventually something new is needed to keep the excitement alive.

As for what said excitement could be, well, I think Odin helps give enough hints. For all that Yayoi’s appearance may fill in the blanks regarding the pasts of Azu and Sonoka, it’s quite hard thinking that our gracious god doesn’t have an ulterior motive or two given his actions, appearances, and the very twisted manner of his self-described love for his warrior girls. This is arguably Sigurui’s biggest unknown, because while the show is playing close to the likes of Strike Witches in appearance and material, the potential for a real 180 in terms of plot exists thanks to the utter lack of info regarding the Pillars, their nature, and Odin’s continued remarks on Ragnarok. As previously mentioned, it’s fairly easy to guess where things are going if you have enough knowledge of Norse mythology, but that’s no guarantee Sigurui will be having its story stay close to what we’re familiar with. When it comes to these types of shows anything is possible, and the only way to find out what happens is to keep on watching.

We just have to hope the payoff at the end is worth the price of admission.

  1. Always get the feeling that it’s Loki that wants Ragnarok, not Odin. So that’s a curiosity. Though when it comes to preparation for Ragnarok, it’s understandable that Odin would favour Valkyries like Claudia. A high casualty battle would also be favourable to him. But I don’t think deaths of Valkyries is in his interest.

Azuzu sure sucks at fighting games. Can’t turtle or play offensively. XD Have to wonder what it says about her weakness though. She should be fine working under pressure since she manages to land her damaged plane safely all the time.

Also loved the bath scene. I find convenient censoring a lot more fun than steam or suspicious light rays.

    1. I think in Azu’s case it’s more of what rests on her shoulders. She can land her plane fine because it’s just her she has to worry about in that moment; other instances though her decisions likely would affect her fellow Valkyries/pilots so that’s where she trips up. Pretty much a case of being unable to mentally handle her responsibilities, whether real or imagined.

  2. Is that Lizbet? I thought it was Amatsuka Yayoi. Isn’t Lizbet one of the heretofore pointless characters (along with Rusalka and Leyli) who had only a brief, first episode appearance thus far.

With Azu, it’s more an issue of indecision or slow decision as she incorporates ideas that none of the others ever think of into her calculations. And given the conditions of her job, she doesn’t have the time to spare on self-induced paralysis. That said, I think she’s the most interesting (and appealing) of the characters so far — maybe for all the shows I’m watching this season although I also find Nana bears close watching. The whole team is pretty good though. I don’t think this show bears that much of a comparison with Strike Witches even if they do use a similar alien mechanism to drive the show.

    1. Whoops yes it is Yayoi, I probably mistook Lizbet for her when searching for her name after forgetting it halfway through the episode lol – corrected!

Azu is probably my favourite too for the moment, if just because she has a tsundere attitude meshed with a tinkering personality and love of sleep. She and the rest of the cast are what arguably keep Sigururi afloat given how fleshed out they all are and how good the chemistry is between them. IMO this is the main reason it can still be compared with Strike Witches (or for that matter Kotobuki), as outside of alien invasions both shows are heavily character-driven.
